CruiseLovininIL Posted January 10, 2017 #1 Share Posted January 10, 2017 Hi. We are sailing 1/21 on the NCL Spirit to the Canary Islands. I have heard that once the ship enters open waters of the Atlantic when thru the Straights of Gibraltar the waters can get choppy. I have never had a problem before and have been on 4 other cruises. First time in the Atlantic though. Does anyone have any experiences to share? Thanks in advance Sent from my iPhone using Forums
SquishTheWhale Posted January 10, 2017 #2 Share Posted January 10, 2017 (edited) We found some days a little choppy. Not terrible, but a definite sway- the kind that makes you walk in a serpentine pattern even though you're trying to walk straight! And we could see the curtain in the theatre swaying, things like that. It was my first cruise so I don't have anything to compare it to, but the CD also remarked it was choppy and some people seemed to struggle a little walking with the sway. The wind caused the running track to be closed a few times, and the pools too. But it was nothing that had a major impact. It was fun to watch the waves from the windows inside. I get horribly travel sick so I took some tablets pre-emptively and was fine. But we were on the Epic which is a bigger ship! trinitytrees Posted January 10, 2017 #3 Share Posted January 10, 2017 Just off spirit, it was quite choppy sailing from Casablanca to canaries, pool was emptied and shows changed. Also from Maderia to Malaga. But been in worse. Rolled a bit, like other poster said sway was comical to watch people including me try to walk straight! smellmo Posted January 10, 2017 #4 Share Posted January 10, 2017 Sailed a TransAtlantic cruise through the Straight of Gibraltar last May. It was extremely windy with large waves, but no sea sickness problems. We were told it is always windy there between the continents. Budget Queen Posted January 10, 2017 #5 Share Posted January 10, 2017 You are on water- there is no way to predict sea conditions. Sure this can be a "rough sailing". or it can be "smooth as glass". Only time will tell. Take precautions if you are prone to motion sickness. Consult your health care professional for the best advice perhaps. don't-use-real-name Posted January 11, 2017 #6 Share Posted January 11, 2017 Well that sort of thing happens when a motionless cork in a bath tub is upset by someone or thing entering the tub. The Ocean currents the tides and the prevailing winds all come into play. A meteorologist's roll of the dice ! Que sera sera - nature is providing new amusement park rides - some more amusing to others and some less - all patrons of the topsiders bar will not have to pass muster and breathalyzer tests - you have already shown that walking a straight line is a piece of cake. Those that are not drinking must use the utmost caution predicting the timing of swells to avoid what swells do to ones equilibrium ! Just a swell folks all's swell that ends swell ! Oh and do watch out for the Grand Piano doing it's own waltz unattended ! Do Si Do everything on the port side move to the starboard and promenade back now starboard to port and take a dizziness respite - here comes that piano again. If your ship did not have a bowling alley it now has one ! Pin fees not included ! So fasten your seat belts it is going to be a 'rocky ride' ! jodieh12 Posted January 11, 2017 #9 Share Posted January 11, 2017 I lost 24 hours to my bed on the spirit in February between Casablanca and Madeira. I was fine lying down but as soon as I sat up I felt really ill. I now take bonine and have done the route again and was fine. xx
wales4ever Posted January 11, 2017 #10 Share Posted January 11, 2017 Going on the same cruise in 6 weeks time. We have been on a Canaries cruise 4 times before and every time it has been rough going to and from Madeira. We had to turn around once on the way there as it was too rough to continue.....
