We came off the Solstice a couple of weeks ago, nothing on the docket mentioning 18% gratitudes but the drinks are not cheap on the Solstice, Crown was $11 American Dollars, wine between $9 and $13 a glass, cocktails from $9 up to $16 American dollars, not cheap when you do the exchange.

 

If I understand this correctly, drink prices on Trans-Pacific cruises originating from AUS/NZ are more expensive than Trans-Pacific cruises originating from NA due to the fact that NA drink prices automatically tack on 18% gratuity whereas AUS/NZ do not ?

Yes that's correct. The 18% is included in the prices which makes them more expensive upfront.

 

I know that when I bought my drink package online they quoted the price of it excluding gratuity and added it on at the checkout

Correct and the prices are rounded up as well. (i.e $5 + 18% = $5.90 but it gets rounded to $6.).

The final price you pay will be similar though; it's just one gratuity is quoted and charged separately and in the other it's hidden in the price. You still pay either way.

 

As for rounding, I've seen them round down as well - I believe it's rounded to the nearest.
