Walking to Atlantis

My sister and I will be in Nassau next week and thinking about going over to explore Atlantis and Paradise Island. We will be in port a long time with no real plans. I've walked to Junkanoo and the Fish Fry with no issues.

1. Can you walk safely to Atlantis and how long does it take? Google says about 40 minutes.

2. Can you shop at Atlantis without being a guest?

3. How far is the public beach access once you get on PI?

Thanks!

We've walked back from the Fish Fry a couple of times but I wouldn't walk to Atlantis. It's about a 2-and-a-half mile walk and you have to go over a fairly steep bridge. I've read other people say they did it but to me it's worth $4 to take a cab. :)

There is a water taxi that will take you from the pier to the island.

Yes, you can take the water taxi or van taxi.

We just walk. When you get off the ship, usually there are tourists that walk to the casino. It look safe to me.

Bring umbrella in case it rain.

This is what I would be concerned about: The U.S. Department of State rates the criminal threat level for New Providence Island*(Nassau) as critical, with the criminal threat level for Grand Bahama Island, which includes Freeport, rated as high. Crime in general has been rising in the Bahamas. Armed robberies, property theft, purse snatchings, and other theft of personal property are the most common crimes against tourists. The Bahamas has experienced a spike in armed robberies at gas stations, convenience stores, fast food restaurants, banks, and residences

We walked to Atlantis with 3 kids between the ages of 8 and 14 as I didn't care to pay $40 plus tips for r/t taxis. There's a sidewalk along Bay St and we felt safe as there's traffic and people around during the day. The walk over the bridge was not a problem. It took us about 30 minutes to get over the bridge from the cruise port. It's about another 15 minutes to Cable beach or 10 minutes to the Atantis where they'll gladly take your money. During our walk, we had taxi drivers slow down and ask if we wanted a ride but I said no so I'm not sure if they would offer a better rate.
