big-mike Posted February 2, 2017 #1 Share Posted February 2, 2017 We just a booked a cruise on the Splendor from Long Beach to Hawaii and back to Long Beach for 10/2018. My Question is, what it would be the best side of the ship to be on as you entered the ports? Our PVP thought the Starboard side would be best, but she was not certain. Also how are the seas in Oct for the crossing? Mike
LizzieB86 Posted February 2, 2017 #2 Share Posted February 2, 2017 I prefer to see the island I've arrived at. Usually that is port side. Other cruisers prefer to see the ocean, so usually that is starboard. Also pier runner watching is a popular activity and typically you can see it if you have a balcony on the port side!! MissKIA Posted February 2, 2017 #3 Share Posted February 2, 2017 (edited) Most of the ports in Hawaii are industrial ports, so your view is basically the roof of a warehouse if you are facing the dock area. It's not the nicest view! I don't think it makes a huge difference which side you're on because you don't know which direction the ship will be coming in from. Also, the ship can dock facing either direction so port side doesn't necessarily mean that side will be facing the port. Micahs Grandad Posted February 2, 2017 #5 Share Posted February 2, 2017 Depends upon the time of the year. When whales are running we like starboard.
SadieN Posted February 2, 2017 #6 Share Posted February 2, 2017 We try to get the opposite of the smoking side
cb at sea Posted February 2, 2017 #7 Share Posted February 2, 2017 Unless you plan to stay sequestered in your cabin, either side is fine! You never can tell which side they will dock on. "Portside" simply means "left"....and, when docked, you're in a harbor.....there are views everywhere!
