Funkat Posted February 7, 2017 #1 Share Posted February 7, 2017 Our ship will sail into Haines on Sunday, May 21, 2017 and are looking to rent a car. Will will be in port from 12pm until 10pm. Since Avis is only open until 6pm and is a great deal more expensive than the 2 other rental agencies (both run out of motels), we are leaning towards either of the other 2. Does anyone have any experience with renting a car in Haines? Please share your experience. Thanks
NancyIL Posted February 7, 2017 #2 Share Posted February 7, 2017 (edited) I rented a car in July 2008, and I'm pretty sure it was rented from one of the motels. We drove out the Haines Highway as far as the Million Dollar Falls (Mile 93 in the Yukon Territory). There was quite a backup at the Canadian border, so don't be in a hurry. We stopped for lunch at the 33 Mile Roadhouse: http://www.33mileroadhouse.com If you plan to do any driving in the ports, it's worth it to get a copy of The Milepost - https://www.themilepost.com (generally cheaper from Amazon). Another option is Murray's Guide: http://www.explorenorth.com/library/roads/haines_highway.html Edited February 7, 2017 by NancyIL

I've heard that you have to be careful with some of these smaller rental companies, as some have older, less reliable vehicles. Budget Queen Posted February 7, 2017 #5 Share Posted February 7, 2017 I rented cars several times from Haines. All you have to do, is see how long the vendors you are looking at have been in business if you have concerns. I've mostly rented from Avis- it's worth it for the ease of walking to the cruise dock. I'd suggest you call them direct, being this is at Hotel Halsingland, they would be open late checking in guests? Call them direct. Take a look at a map for other locations. I've arranged pick up/drop offs personally with contacts. Not even sure there is "cab" service. You'll need to look at total costs and time involved with your selection. englander Posted February 7, 2017 #6 Share Posted February 7, 2017 From my research of the 2 other options in Haines they both have good reputations and reviews (what few I could find on trip advisor). Lynn View Lodge now has a shop, Lynn View Mercantile, which is where they keep their cars and it is located across the street from the dock. This is what they told me in their email. The other one, Captain's Choice, is not far but they do offer a free shuttle to/from the ship. Both of these rent for $91 tax included. We have reserved a car from Captain's Choice.
