How to Upgrade?

I'm about 30 days out from a cruise on Holland America. Have a "guaranteed" balcony with an obstructed view. Haven't been assigned a cabin yet. Thinking of upgrading but not sure how to go about it or how it works. Should I wait until it's closer to the Sail Date? Do I call the cruise line and just ask what the rates are to upgrade and what's available? How long should I wait to call...3 weeks out, 2 weeks out, a week out? Should I keep calling them and checking to see what's available? What kind of "deals" would be reasonable to expect or hope for? Any advice appreciated!

As discussed on your post on the HAL board (the better place for this), if you call, they will charge you rack rate. If they call you, then a deal is probably coming.

 

But a lot of this depends on how you booked. With a travel agent, on line or brick and mortar? Or direct with HAL.

I've never been called for an upsell and would guess that it's less likely with a guarantee booking. All you need to do is check what the current rates are for your sailing. If a higher category is at a price you are willing to pay then you can call and upgrade.
