MomC Posted March 2, 2017 #1 Share Posted March 2, 2017 We will be staying a few days in Dubai prior to our cruise. We will charge most of our expenses, but will need to do some tipping and other incidentals. Is American money accepted there or will we need to exchange some of our money to their currency? Thanks for your help with this.:) Mom C
buchhalm Posted March 3, 2017 #2 Share Posted March 3, 2017 Firstly, topping is not hugely common in Dubai. Appreciated for sure, but nobody will chase you down the street if you don't tip. Secondly, I live in Oman. Would I be able to pay with Rials in the US? Geeeees! 😋;) Ok... some shops will take foreign currency but probably NOT for really small purchades. Any change given will very likely be in Dirhams and don't expect a favourable exchange rate. Just change 50 bucks at the airport and be done with it. Thanks for your help with this.:) Mom C If you tip or pay in US $ the porter, driver etc will have to exchange it for UAD and pay the exchange rates. As other poster suggested just get 50 bucks at airport. Love the example of paying in other money in US, don't think so.
MomC Posted March 3, 2017 Author #5 Share Posted March 3, 2017 Thanks for the quick replies! I will exchange some at the airport. So much of the world accepts U.S. currency that I needed to ask. I have travelled all over the world and there are places that love new dollar bills. One more question: if I have left over UAE currency is it accepted in other countries in that region? Thanks again! No better resource than cruise critic people!:)

I:) you can't spend US dollars in Australia either, just like we can't spend our dollars over there. BUT..we were in a shop in Alaska one day, and an AMERICAN asked if they accepted US dollars .. omg. what country did she think she was in ?? buchhalm Posted March 14, 2017 #7 Share Posted March 14, 2017 UAE Dirham are well accepted in at least Oman and Bahrain. Common exchange rate in the street and small shops is 10 AED to 1 OMR.
