Southmapton hotels

I think only a few are mentioned because Southampton doesn't have that many hotels - it's not a major tourist town.

If I were cruising out of Southampton, I'd be spending the night before in London and taking the train down the morning of embarkation.

Southampton is mainly a port and isn't the sort of place we would dream of visiting for a holiday. The hotels you see mentioned here are the best of what there is. if you want something a bit more special try The Pig In The Wall or Ennio's. If you just want a typical chain but decent quality stay then Premier Inn West Quay is your best bet. Holiday Inn, Grand Harbour and Mercure Dolphin are also popular but IMO all of them have rooms in need of refurbishment

I have read several posts about hotels in Southampton, but only a few are mentioned.

Can I get a few more recommendations for a pre-cruise hotel please.

For something different, skip London.

We recommend where we stayed, at a lovely B&B, across the water in the village of Hythe.

Check the reviews:

Easy transportation to the Port.

Great views of the Ships.

Home of the famous Hythe Ferry http://hytheferry.co.uk/introduction/

Careful; this B&B sells out quickly.

I'm thinking of skipping London and exploring a town outside of the city. Is there anything to do close by to this B&B? What did you do?

Just to point out the B&B mentioned is across the water from Southampton and not near London. If you haven't got a car you will need to take the Hythe ferry.

Another note to point out is that this Hythe is in Hampshire. There is another Hythe in Kent.

We stayed at the novotel for two nights - nothing special - but was walking distance to the port (although there are closer hotels). We hired a car for a day and visited the new forest - which we enjoyed immensely - the new forest ponies and donkeys roam everywhere so you do need to drive carefully :) http://www.thenewforest.co.uk/

"The Maples B&B, is a beautiful early last century home situated in the Hampshire village of Hythe.

Ideally situated for exploring the New Forest National Park."

After an all night flight fron NYC, we spent the first day recovering from jet-lag.

Next morning, visited New Forest and the quaint village of Hythe. Lovely.

Took the Ferry to Southampton on the second evening for a special dinner.

Third morning, the owner provided transportation to the Port, about 30 minute drive.

We're taking a car service to Southampton from London the night prior to our cruise & staying at the holiday Inn Herbert Walker so we can walk to the ship the next day. We will have the full day in london but then pay more reasonable price for a hotel by going down that evening.

We're doing similar, although not any time in London that day. We're flying into Heathrow and then heading to Southampton for the afternoon. We want to go to the Maritime Museum there (forget the exact name), but I know they have some Titanic stuff on display as that's where she set sail from. We figure we'll be exhausted (since our flight arrives at like 6 a.m.), so we can just crash early in Southampton that night and be ready to board the ship in the morning.

We are also doing the Holiday Inn. It seemed decent enough for one nights sleep, nothing fancy, which is fine. And it's close to the port so we don't need a cab or other transportation to get us to the ship.

We're doing our London stuff when we get back, which is why we don't need anytime there before. We're staying another 6 days after we dock.
