HC cabin frustration

Geri,

Just to let you know, there were 2 HC minisuites available at the 90 day mark. The odds of them being booked for actual need at that point in time are slim in my mind. Perhaps NCL could check (I think it was) 11652 and 11654 or maybe it was 11152 or 11154...it's worth a shot...but I know they were aft and next to us.

Hmmm. I'll call again Monday

we are booked on the Gem for April 8th cruise. We booked it about 6 months ago. I asked for a HC cabin and was told there were none available but to keep trying back. I was kind of lax in trying because my back was feeling ok not great but ok. The last two cruises I rented a scooter because we had a garden villa and space was not an issue. Luckily for me I had it both times. On the Gem last April the morning of the cruise I had a very bad episode and could barely walk. When I got to the ship I was actually crying from so much pain. The cruise I had on the Jade last December I fell at harvest caye and luckily I had my scooter both times. It saved my cruises more than I can express.

I have been checking every week if any HC cabins became available nope nope nope every phone call. Well low and behold two weeks before my next cruise my back is fully blown out (don't ask there are many things wrong with my back). So now I'm in panic mode about not having a scooter. Called the access desk and they said they would check every HC reservation to see if they are really neede. Answer none available. I find it very hard to believe that every single HC cabin I see being used by someone in a wheelchair or scooter. Shame on those people. I know for a fact people just take them for the extra space (no I have never done it but know people who have). Worse comes to worse my friend will have to wheel me around in a wheelchair when it's to painful to walk but sure would be nice to have a HC cabin. I asked if I got one could I leave it some place near by to charge st night of course the answer I received was no.

Well just needed to vent a little and tell people if you really don't need a HC cabin have some compassion for people who really do.

The only thing that I am going to say is How do you know that the people booked in the handicap cabins do not need them?

If they are not needed by the passenger then you are correct but just because you can't get one does not mean that they are not needed by the people in them.

That's why showing a handicap card isn't a bad idea. If u ask for one when you show up to the pier you would have to show your card or you're out of luck to get on the ship and have your cabin.

What about those of us who are assigned a HC cabin by NCL? My Mom and I are sailing on the Jade in just under 2 weeks (we booked a few weeks ago) and the cabin they gave us was a HC cabin. We don't need it so don't have handicapped cards. It doesn't seem fair or right that we should be denied boarding and not allowed on our cruise for something that's not our fault or our doing.

You wouldn't be denied boarding, they would change you to another cabin if one is availalbe and if another cabin was not available, you would stay where you are.

What I said was "I know people" who have gotten HC cabins and are completely fine" by no means did I say everyone who has a HC cabin doesn't need them. I'm just telling what I know personally

From NCL's website: All scooters and wheelchairs MUST be stored in the stateroom. Due to the safety and escape way requirements established by SOLAS regulations, they cannot be stored in the hallways, stairways, or any other public area.

Interesting. On my recent cruise on the Epic someone left their scooter outside the cabin all the time.

Also, NCL is not going to demand a person show a need for an HC room. They would end up being sued for HIPAA violations and embarrassment.

Not saying I agree, just saying that is what would happen.

You should have reported that to the guest services and if nothing happened quickly, escalate until proper action was taken (meaning the scooter not being stored in public spaces) - for the safety of yourself and others.

It always amazes me how ignorant people (in this case those leaving the scooter in the hallway and at least the steward(s) servicing that area who are well aware of the maritime laws and surely must have noticed that) can be. :(

Unfortunately folks, like the person who left their scooter in the hall, break the rules and endanger others and they make it difficult for others using a walker, wheelchair, etc. to pass by their cabin. But I sure they didn't care about anyone else.

BTW, I'm not sure HIPPA applies here, as a cruise line can require a doctor's note for someone requesting a handicap cabin.

I saw the same thing on our last couple of cruises on the Dawn.

  • 2 weeks later...

Well on the Gem in a regular balcony cabin could not get a HC cabin. First of all there is no way in the world the scooter would fit in this cabin. The way the layout is it would be impossible. However, what no one told me on the phone was that call guest services and they will store it for you when needed. No one ever mentioned this to me when I called a billion times. It is on the dailies. Our steward Roberto is awesome. There is a cubby area across from my Cabin and he said to keep it there which I have been doing. Charging it while I'm playing in the casino. They have adapters to use for the European outlets which convert. So if anyone was like me worrying it all worked out.

I would gladly show a need/provide letter etc. if it helped improve the accessibility of HC staterooms. I don't know how many rooms are booked fraudulently. I think it's just a matter of a low ratio of HC rooms to the need for them.

On a different note does any cruise line actually move guests out of an unneeded room or do they just say that to give false hope?!

I just got off the getaway, a cruise that I booked 16 months ago. I need an accessible cabin

They were all booked and repeated calls did not help. My scooter just fit in the entryway but made it difficult to get into the washroom

I fell. Caught my left thumb in the door. Isn't the real solution

to have more accessible cabins?
