Eagles in Haines

Good Day Cruise Critic Group,

I am researching for my future Alaska cruise, and my main goal will be the Eagles in Haines. Would love to make it for the migration, but that is Oct/Nov and on. If I read the cruises schedules correctly, they all stop going into Skagway, Haines, and Sitka the end of September. Therefore my mode of transportation being a cruise(to keep wife happy) needs to be done prior. So my question is, I have read through several posts here and on Tripadvisor, and the rafting excursion in Haines through the Eagle Preserve seems to be the way to go. But I seem to get conflicting views as to the quanity/quality of eagle views, during the same time period that being September.

Any information is greatly appreciated, this trip is at least 3 years away. Is September(late) a good plan, would like to hit Seattle Mariners ball game on the way out, or middle of the month better. Or a completely different plan is what I should look at. We will be a couple in our late 50's at this time health is good. Though not overly excited about the raft ride.

Thank you for any help in advance.

You’ll see Bald Eagles in Southeast Alaska, lots of them. If you’re primary goal is to see Bald Eagles go to the Skagit River Bald Eagle festival in January. A good portion of the Bald Eagles winter over in the Skagit River area because the rivers are full of salmon.

Here are a few links

This will keep you busy for a while. Come to Seattle in the winter and take in a Seahawk game.

Hi guys, will be in Haines on May 21, on the Radiance ots, an hope to see eagles, from noon to 10. Or would that be to early? Inquiring minds would like to know.

You'll see lots of them. All you have to do is look in the trees for a white cotton ball or they'll be sittings on the pilings on the waterfront

Our first visit to Alaska was in Sept. and we took the Haines rafting trip through the eagle preserve. We were overwhelmed with the number of eagles easily visible. We got dozens of great eagle pics, many with zoom lens. They don't seem to be bothered by the crazy rafters and just watch from a low limb, as you glide beneath, cameras at the ready. Great time to visit Haines, based on what we experienced. We'll be there again this

May and hoping for a similar experiences. I must add that the guides on the rafting trip were excellent -- very

knowledgeable about navigating through the everchanging river, as well as history and interesting details on eagles. By the way, I noted your concern about the raft ride, it would actually qualify as a float trip, mostly calm enough to get good shots of the eagles. We had a guide plus 6 passengers, plenty of room, appropriate gear provided.

You need to go to Haines in the fall if you really want to see eagles - http://www.shetzers.com/bald-eagle-photography-workshop-and-tour/2/. Imagine seeing a tree with 5 or 6 eagles sitting in it.
