does everyone in my family of 5 need a lanyard or just the parents?

No one need a lanyard. If you are referring to the sail and sign card then yes everyone should get one. That's how they keep track of you getting on and off the ship. They also use it, as you know, for many other things but getting on and off is important to have it.

Side note: you have to purchase your own lanyard

For our DDs we hooked their lanyards onto a belt loop and tucked it into their pocket.

Sometimes we used just the hook from a casino coil lanyard. Sometimes we half hitched the whole lanyard around the belt loop. As they got older they tied their lanyard to a purse strap.

DD19 decided she was too old for a lanyard, lost her card within 30 minutes of boarding. She got herself a lanyard.lol

ok, thanks. my oldest has a lanyard. But my husband and I will probably just keep up with the other two's lanyards.

I think you are confusing sign & sail card and lanyard. A lanyard is just a bit of rope/fabric that your card gets clipped onto. Lanyards are optional and a lot of people on here don't like them. I personally like having a lanyard to keep up with my card. I'm on vacation and really don't care if I look silly. The sign & sail card isn't optional and is what you use to get in and out of your cabin and buy items onboard.

Our kids are 11 and 8. We allowed our 11 year old sign out privileges for the scavenger hunts only, and therefore she needed a lanyard for her sign and sail card. She actually made a necklace in Camp that served as her "lanyard" during the cruise. Our 8 year old didn't need one, but got one from Camp and used it to wear his s&s card as a fashion statement. DH and I weren't planning on using lanyards and haven't needed one on our last two cruises, but after we each lost our cards this trip, we decided to buy a couple of them in the fun shops. :) So, to each his own. It depends on your situation, and everyone's situation is unique.

our children are 11, 9, and 7. Do they all need their own lanyard? Is this how they keep track of them in camp carnival?

Not sure of the question. A Lanyard is nothing more than a place to keep your card on your body. Do you want it in a lanyard, or in your pocket? What is the choice? How do you want you kids to have them? Do you want them in a lanyard, or can they be trusted with them in their pocket. Are you going to sign them in and out of the kid's club, or can they sign out on their own. NO, they don't need one, but you need to decide on how you want to keep the cards, and if the kids need them or not for the activities they are doing.

We got everyone in the family a lanyard. Our kids are 13, 9, and 6. It was all in the fun of planning the cruise. Everyone picked a lanyard (Pokemon, Shopkins, etc).....I figured that even though they don't have to wear them all the time, it'll be easier to keep track of the cards if they are on a lanyard.

Our dollar tree has cute lanyards that we used for our kids when they were younger. Much cheaper than the cruise ship ones in case they get misplaced and they were all sparkley with rhinestones which the kids loved. They liked having their own S&S cards hanging around their necks on the lanyards just like all of the other cruisers. Makes it easier for them to run up and get a drink on their own if they have bottomless bubbles. Or to run ahead and open up the cabin for us. Of course, we always hold on to them while swimming or while in port.

Camp Carnival (at least for the 2-8 year olds) has name tags that clip on for them to wear while they are in camp. It has their name, room number, muster station and any food allergies on it.

I keep my 6 year olds sail & sign card with me. I don't allow her to wear anything with her name on it normally.

Had lanyards for all 6 of us (4 kids 12, 10, 8, 6). It worked out well for us and will use them again on our cruise in June. We wore them whenever we were out of the cabin and I collected everyone's when we got off the ship at port and kept them in my purse.

Everyone in your party will have a sail and sign card. When my kids were in Camp Carnival I held onto their cards until they were old enough to sign themselves in and out of Camp. As for lanyards - none of us are crazy about them. I have a particular aversion to wearing anything around my neck (last time DH bought me a necklace was almost 40 years ago, before he knew better):p. We all wear shorts with pockets and that works fine for us.

I don't let the kids drink soda and we still sign the 11 year old (and of course 7 year old) out of camp, so they don't carry sail and sign cards on them. Unless they will be buying things on their own or are old enough to be walking around the ship without a parent, I don't think there is a need.
