** Renting a Car in Ft. Lauderdale**

We are going down the day before our cruise. It is going to be 6 of us. We will be arriving that morning and we will have all day to do whatever.

We are staying at the Aqua. I think is the name.

Should we rent a car or would it be better for us just to hire a uber or taxi and take us places???

You could use Uber to get you to Aqua and then use the Trolley or Water Taxi to get you around depending on where you want to go?

depends...if you want to spend time at the beach then your hotel is in a good location.

on the other hand if you rent a car then you can go further afield. Sawgrass mall is about a half hour away and an airboat ride of the everglades is about an hour away.

if you pick the car up at the FLL airport when you drop it off there is a rental car shuttle from the airport to the port. we did this some time ago and I dropped the rest of the group off with the luggage at the port then returned the car and took the shuttle to the port.

hotel charges for parking.

Thanks you guys.

We was just wantng to spend sometime on the beach and the area around the hotel. Is there stores within walking distance? For like food for the night? Wine place to get wine for the cruise.

We have no idea which would be better.

If we decide to rent the car captain is the drop off place for the car rental close to the cruise port?

Within a mile radius of your hotel, there are plenty of stores, bars and restaurants. A couple of years ago, my wife and I stayed in the same area pre-cruise. Walked all over, rode the water taxi, and the trolley. Plenty of things to do. You don't need a car. There is a CVS about a mile south of your hotel and a Publix supermarket about a mile north west.

Search for your hotel on Google maps, zoom in and move both north and south along Fort Lauderdale Beach Blvd to get an idea oif what is around.

Thanks. I just now found out another problem. The Aqua doesnt have the right rooms for us. Last night they did and my CC wasn't working.

Now we are back to looking for a hotel in the same area. Any ideas?

There is a car rental co. that has a drop off office right outside the port. Free shuttle to ship. Under 5 minute drive! We got in at 6am. Rented a car at airport and went to HardRock casino and had a great breakfast and even won $20. At noon we drove to the port and dropped off the car. It's way better than going back to the airport.

When making your hotel reservations, check to see if they charge for parking. Most of those on the beach do and most are in the range of $25/night. Add that to the cost of the car rental in your calculations.

We stayed in Embassy Suites on 17th Street. Older hotel in need of refurbishment but clean with breakfast and evening reception included in price. Close to Publix ! CVC, Total Wine for last minutes requisites. SunTrolley stop outside Publix will take you to beach/ Galleria Mall for $1 each ride or $3 all day ticket (till 6pm)

Concierge recommended car hire as we wanted to go to Sawgrass Mills. Said price was $39 but we ended up paying $93 including taxes and insurance. Was good that they collected us from hotel and we just had to leave car in hotel's car park and hand keys to reception. Have been to Sawgrass now, assuaged curiosity so wouldn't bother next time.

If staying in this area again, would not hire a car as taxi, Sun Trolley and some say Uber ( not tech savvy enough to use myself) are easy, relatively cheap.

This is outdated information.

No rental car companies offer a shuttle from FLL to Port Everglades, although, all major rental car companies have rental locations surrounding the port that offer shuttle to the port. You can pick up a rental car at FLL, then drop at one of these locations near Port Everglades and there will be no drop charges.

sorry if my info was dated...when we were there, there were common large buses run by the major rental car companies together....

we also did rental from Thrifty which was close to the port but there was an issue with the size of the van and the number of people

last year we stayed at the Renaissance Cruise Port Hotel in Fort Lauderdale. stayed on points so cheap..$10 minimum on cab fares and we were under that for the trip to the ship. lots of restaurants and pizza and sandwich shops

The change occurred in February so if you haven't been here lately you couldn't have known. Alamo opened a new location that services Port Everglades at 1700 Eller Drive, so the shuttle from FLL to Port Everglades that was shared by Alamo, Enterprise and National (Enterprise owns all three companies) stopped operating. Alamo and Enterprise have separate locations near the port and have their own shuttles.

Which car rental company is it that does this? We are planning on getting a rental car when we get back from our cruise because we have a late flight. Hoping to drive to an airboat tour before we head to the airport to go home.

It was thrifty car rental. I would call and just make sure. We picked it up at the airport and dropped off at the cruise terminal. We could actually see our ship from the drop off. Right outside the gate. Good luck.

If you are getting it after the cruise just go with the cheapest one. All the car rentals have vans to take you to their office. We did this once and there were long lines. Only drawback. I'm not sure you can pickup at the terminal.
