Liberty or majesty of seas

I would pick Liberty, and I'm not just saying that because this is the Carnival board. :) Liberty has a lot more dining options and much larger cabins. The cabins on Majesty of the Seas are TINY.

ETA: I've only been on the 3-day cruises on these ships so I don't know what the itineraries are for the 4-days. Is there one itinerary you prefer over the other?

If the itinerary is similar, I would definitely choose the Liberty, better food options, better crew, nicer, larger, ship. The food on the Majesty of the Seas was horrible, both in the buffet and main dining room. The pizza venue was always closed, the ice cream machines always broken or if they were working, no dishes or cones available. The ship seemed to fold up the sidewalks around 10:00 p.m.

CruisinCrow is correct, the staterooms are very small and cramped on the Majesty..

My wife and I were on the Majesty last year and agree the ship and its cabins were cramped. Every morning at the buffet we had to share a table. No big deal but sometimes we like to be by ourselves. We did feel the food was a notch better on Majesty and the entertainment was much better. We just got off Liberty yesterday and had a great time but we felt the food and service were lacking. Also, we felt the shows weren't very good. The one show, "Flick" was difficult to understand at first but then we figured out it was a tribute to famous movies. There was hypnotist that did the usual by having people do funny things on stage. Nothing new there.

Our first two cruises were on Majesty when she was new. We have been back many times over the years and are booked in Jan for another. Majesty is still our favorite ship, partly for sentimental reasons and partly for the great crew. There are a lot of long time crew members including our first waiter from 1994 who is still on the ship in a management position. All that said, the cabins are tiny. They are well laid out, but we alternate getting dressed for dinner it is so cramped. I don't mind because I get ready first and then go to a bar to wait on my wife. :) Based on what I know about Majesty and what I know about Liberty (nothing other than looking at the profile) I would say go Liberty. As much as we like Majesty, I don't think she has much to offer you that you would not get on Liberty.

Gotta agree; I'd go with Liberty if price and itineraries are similar.

Liberty has many more free/included dining options than on dear old Majesty and the difference in cabin square-footage is especially huge. (The 121 sq. ft. interiors on Majesty are among the smallest at sea. Carnival's oceanviews are almost twice the size, at 225 sq. ft.)

I'll always have a soft spot for Majesty since she hosted my first cruise experience and I've been hooked ever since, but even with her currently underpowered motors, Liberty wins this race. :)

Thank you Duck for posting this question. After responding I did some further research and immediately called my travel agent. We booked Liberty for October. I did not realize that Liberty had the 2.0 upgrades. We got a great deal with our post cruise Carnival promo including a $50 OBC. Our current schedule:

August - RCI Liberty of the Seas

October - Carnival Liberty

Jan 18 - Majesty of the Seas

We sold our camper and had some cash to play with. What better way to spend part of it than a get-away cruise! I can taste my Guy's burgers and Blue Iguana burritos already. Despite our feelings for the Majesty, the Liberty is by far the greater value

In fact, I think Liberty was the very first Carnival ship to receive the FunShip 2.0 upgrades. It's been several years since we cruised on Liberty but I remember that the upgrades were brand-new when we sailed on her, not long after her drydock.

Yep, and somehow I had missed that fact. I agree that those are two big plusses for Liberty. There is really a lot more though. Majesty has no dedicated adult area like Serenity. There is no aft pool. There are no specialty dining venues like a steakhouse unless you count Johnny Rockets which is more than offset by Guys. I hear they may be adding one though. There is nothing to compare with Alchemy Bar on Majesty. If you gamble, the casino is much larger. Really, you would have to put a Voyager or Freedom class ship on the 3/4 day cruises to even come close. Even then I am not sure I would not choose Liberty all other things being equal.

Majesty is truly from another era, one in which we were introduced to cruising and which we still enjoy. We will truly hate to see her go when she is inevitably sold off. I am sure there are folks who feel the same about the Fantasy class which is Carnival's version of that era. We want to try one of those before they disappear as well.

Though Liberty is a much newer ship, I think there is more research needed to figure out which cruise line would be better for you. If someone asked me if I would chose Carnival Fantasy over RCL's Freedom of the Seas (not something would happen but if it did I would take the Fantasy). I would end up taking the Carnival one because it is the line I like.

Here is some Help

For if you want to see if Carnival Food is more up your alley check this out:

I don't have an equivalent for RCL, but under Oasis they have some MDR menus

This link has a 3 Day Fun Times (don't see a 4 day) -- It's the daily schedule

Here they actually have a Cruise Compass for the 4 day Majesty

Moreover, Majesty has two hot-tubs; Liberty has 6, plus whatever's in the spa.

Easily. I like Johnny Rockets and will probably eat there at least once on my Independence Of the Seas cruise next February -- I'm really hoping they keep it open for us until 5 am like they did last year (it's a full-ship charter with concerts all night) -- but Guy's is yummy, involves less of a wait, and you can't beat the price.

I'm assuming you mean on the Liberty, there. :)

She has already survived one almost-selloff...and Royal kept her. Here's hoping she stays for a while, since she is -- literally -- in a class by herself.

I am sure there are folks who feel the same about the Fantasy class which is Carnival's version of that era. We want to try one of those before they disappear as well.

It will be a while before that happens since there are many Fantasy-class ships in service and they're well-liked. I like their small-ship feel and -- especially -- the aft location for Serenity, which means less wind, less noise and a gorgeous view of the ship's wake curling off into the distance. The fact that Carnival is adding FunShip 2.0 features to them, like Guy's and Blue Iguana Cantina (which we thought was impossible due to their smaller size) just adds to their allure.

After I win the lottery*, one of my bucket list items is to book one of the Owners Suites on a Fantasy-class ship. They're among the nicest suites on any Carnival ship and don't even appear on any deck plans. :)

Correct, I should have said "Majesty has nothing to compare with Alchemy Bar." The Schooner bar on Majesty is a great area though. Alchemy is not your average bar though. I think RCI rebranding the Champagne Bar to R Bar is in response to the Alchemy theme.

I agree on that observation R Bar. I was a bit suprised they went in that direction. My brand impression of RCL is they went for an exclusive Main Line or Hamptons vibe with the Scooner Bar and Windjammer theming. The members only signage helped reinforce that policy and theming.

I felt that Carnival was alot more populist in its policies and branding. Which goes back to the discussion of their frequent guest benefits.

The Champagne Bar fit that core branding in my opinion, much like the parties where guests wear all white.

The differences in the branding is the reason I cannot say a newer Carnival ship will be better than anothing older RCL, or visa versa. I feel the programs may appeal to some people over others.

Same with airlines. Alot of ppl may prefer the more populist branding of Southwest, with an exception of a very high tier elite flyer on a trunk airline.
