Running routes

Hi. I am travelling on the 24th June on a Riviera & Mediterranean cruise with Celebrity. I would like to get the odd run in during my vacation and hope to get off the ship, at times, to do this. I have used the running track previously which is great but you do get tired running around in a circle. Our ports are Livorno, Portofino, Villefranche, Toulon, Sete, Ibize, Palma de Mallorca and Valencia. Has anyone done a short run from these ports? If so I would appreciate your feedback. I talking about doing about 5 miles early in the morning before it gets too hot.

Hi, there is a website that gives you great running routes. Here are the best running routes in Livorno including those very near the port:

http://www.mapmyrun.com/it/livorno-tuscany/

I'll let you look up the running routes for your other ports.

I think the main issue you might have is that some ports in the Med are completely industrial and you are not allowed to walk off the ship to the port exit but instead must take a port bus to the exit of the port. But other than that, you should be able to get a run in here and there.

I use this one when running or biking, but I find the tools at walkjogrun.net useful in mapping our routes ahead of time.

I've only been to a few of those ports, never ran from them from a port, but we are runners, so I notice these things. I also use both the aforementioned sites when planning running routes for our land trips.

Villefrance..after the tender just follow walk along the water toward Nice. When we had a land stay in Nice, we used to run each morning toward Villefrance and then back past by Nice toward the airport...we were doing pretty long runs back then however.

Palma has a promenade ...that if I recall correctly extends all the way down to the port. When you exit the port area turn right toward Palma.

Portofino.. if you like trail runs there is a beautiful trail towards Santa Margherita. We hiked it to Santa Margherita but a decent trail runner would have no difficulty running it.

Here's a link with trail instructions:

There is also a trail to San Fruttuoso, that I think is easier.

That's great information and looking forward to going for a run towards Nice and also in Palma. I also like trail running so will have a look at that.

As I said I can use the running track but it is not very interesting.

Actually looking at the map in Nice, we only made past the little port in Nice, before heading back toward the airport...and things do seem to get a bit more difficult with roads near Villefranche (doable, just more difficult). You might hop on a bus and get off near old Nice port and then do an out and back along the promenade to the airport.

Another possibility is running in Monte Carlo. We did a nice run from the port there last year heading east along past the beaches. It does get a little screwy when you have to go through the tunnel by the Casino. It was also a little short, but you could finish with a hill climb, run up to the old town to extend for a real hill workout.

There are always some runners among the crew...including some of the entertainers who really work to keep in shape. My suggestion is that, once aboard, try to contact the cruise director (its usually easy to run into the CD or one of his/her assistants) and simply ask if there are any runners among the crew. Members of the crew often have familiarity with the ports and where to run...and you might even find a running mate.
