Carnival Sunshine Beaches

I was wondering if the beaches of Nassau and Amber Cove are within walking distance right off of the boat or if I need to purchase an excursion?

Thanks!

Amber Cove...I know the shopping/pool area is right off the ship, but I don't believe there is a beach right there.

I also did not see a beach in Amber Cove, nor did I see one when I looked at the port plans on line. DR is really a port where you need to book something and get out and see the island a bit.

Nassau has tons to do within walking distance, though it consistently ranks in the lowest choices of cruisers as it is more dirty, run down and crowded than most ports. Also, it is such a frequent stop that many feel like they have "been there done that" so they don't get off the ship. We always get off. If you search you can find a walking tour including such highlights as queens stair case; the zoo, fort and straw market are all also a long walk/short cab ride away.

The beach in Nassau is Junaknoo and it is 15-20 min to the right when you exit the pier; you have to zig zag a bit following streets but it is pretty self-explanatory to follow the water. At the far end you will find Arawak Caye with colorful little restaurant huts with excellent local food and drinks.

There is no beach at Amber Cove. This port is on the grey Atlantic Ocean. The closest beaches are in Puerto Plata, where a strip of brown coarse sand has a bunch of 2 star hotels on its fringes. Amber Cove is certainly no Punta Cana!

In Nassau, the British Colonial has a decent beach, but you have to pay to be there and its much easier to cab it than walk. Junkanoo is closer. But the best beach in Nassau is probably, IMO, Cable Beach. It has a long stretch of wide sand with 3 hotels and a casino. Got to cab or bus it here, which is why some cruisers won't do the 20 minute ride. Most have never heard of it though, but it's definitely worth a visit.

British Colonial is closer than Junkanoo. Both are easy walking distance unless you have issues with walking.

The British Colonial is next to the port, closer than Junkanoo.
