im booked on a cruise that will be docked for 2 nights at Tianjin and I really want to take a trip to see the terracotta soldiers. Celebrity are offering this but the cost is almost the same price as the cruise. Has anyone done this using an independent tour operator, also taking in the main sights of Bejing.

Tianjin>>Xian is a 2 hour flight and approximately 12hr by road if you don't stop. It is over 15hr by express train (air-conditioned), and 6hrs by bullet train. It is 1125km (700mi). Oh, and Beijing is not on the way, coming or going, although Beijing itself is rather handy to Tianjin (have done it in one of the ubiquitous little white minivans, both directions and time for wandering, in one day).

That's just for background information. Perhaps someone on your Roll Call will have found a better deal, but there is a reason the cost is so high from the cruiseline...
