Read some of the other threads here... lots of info. Basically there are 3 things to do without taking any excursions:

1. Hang out at the port. Shops, pool, pool bar, dolphins.

2. Go to the water park, a short walk away

3. Take the bus or taxi ($3pp each way) to the Mahahual beach area, just 10 minutes away. Long line of beach restaurants and bars, vendors, water sports. Some offer all-inclusive deals. Some let you hang out with chairs and umbrellas if you drink and eat. Some have a charge to stay.

All in all, a cheap place to visit, eat, drink and have fun.

We went to Mahahual several years ago. For the price of a beer, we received two lounges and an umbrella! Couldn't beat the price - two bucks apiece for beers. White sand, and warm water. Much more relaxing than staying at Costa Maya with all the fake stuff cruise lines like to create.
