Lyndihop Posted October 20, 2017 #1 Share Posted October 20, 2017 We booked a TA for mid October of next year. I've seen many posts about how crowded Greece is. Just wondering what to expect??? Hoping that it's a little off season, and can be enjoyed.
Rare Hlitner Posted October 20, 2017 #2 Share Posted October 20, 2017 Gee, I wonder how crowded the United States is in October :). Ok, sorry to make light of your question, but you asking about an entire country with about 11 million people. Or consider that Metropolitan Athens has about 3.75 million souls. As you can imagine, a few cruise ships (or even more then a few cruise ships) has little impact. If you are going to any of the Greek Islands, there will be fewer tourists in October then in July. But overall crowding is often not the issue.as much as the number of ships in port...which can have a major impact on some islands. The best example is Santorini where a few thousand cruise ship passengers can cause major problems with the cable car queue in Fira. Personally, we are more concerned about weather then crowding...and October is one of the best months to be in Greece. We have been in Greece during the summer when the temperature in Athens topped 120F (quite a few folks died during that heat wave). October has wonderful temperatures...although it might be a bit chilly if you plan on swimming. Hank
Lyndihop Posted October 20, 2017 Author #3 Share Posted October 20, 2017 Thanks Hank. I was hoping perhaps it would be a little less. As far as cruise ships in port. Same issues in the Caribbean.
Morgans Posted October 21, 2017 #4 Share Posted October 21, 2017 But remember it's not just cruise ship numbers- Athens and Greece get packed with weekenders from Europe and package holiday makers throughout most of the year - it tends to quieten down at the end of October. Piraeus port is one of the biggest in Europe with cruise ships and ferries from all over Europe. Athens can get very difficult in the height of the summer but it should be quietening down slightly by October but will still be busy.
Rare Keith1010 Posted October 21, 2017 #5 Share Posted October 21, 2017 As mentioned I also think that October is a terrific time to visit Greece. You didn't mention your port stops which may have been helpful. In general you will find less tourists then you do in the summer and the temperature won't be as hot nor as humid. Lyndihop Posted November 5, 2017 Author #7 Share Posted November 5, 2017 I checked our cruise dates....and fortunately all of the Ports we call in Greece are weekdays. Thanks all for the input. Now the long wait till next October.
