Seeing turtles on our own?

Can anyone share some tips for seeing the turtles on our own/without an excursion? Which beach to visit, what time of day, any other tips? We will be visiting Barbados for the first time in January and would love to see turtles while snorkeling, but the family we're traveling with does not have the extra budget to do a catamaran (family of 6, that cost adds up quickly!).

Thanks in advance!

Boatyard and maybe some of the other beach clubs on Carlisle Bay includes a short ride out to swim with the turtles in their admission. Boatyard was charging $20 per person for chair rental, a free drink (try the "shark bite" ;) ), boat ride out to the turtles, and a taxi back to the pier.

Check the web sites for Boatyard, Harbor Lights and Lobster Alive for current offers. You can try to swim out to where the turtles are on your own, but that is a LONG swim. Taxi to any of these should cost about $5 per person, or you can walk it in about 20 or so minutes.

We tried on our own one time , going to Carlyle bay. We swam not too far and saw one turtle, but not up close. It is way better if you can go with someone like Shasa or Silver Moon. I have heard though that Paynes Bay is a good possibility. Google it. When we went with Shasa, we saw 9 turtles, it was awesome , they also offer a 3 hr tour, so less expensive. Maybe someone else will have some good advice.:)
