Public transportation between Condado and OSJ - bus vs. taxi

My wife and I will be staying in the Condado area for 3 nights in early Dec. before cruise (and I've just confirmed the reservation with the hotel). Our intention is to spend part of 1 day exploring Old San Juan. For people who are actually there or have been there recently, is the public bus system running ok? If so, is there any reason we as tourists should avoid the public bus system in favor of taxis for the short trip between Condado and OSJ? Any verifiable safety concerns?

The buses were at best unreliable long before the hurricane hit, so I wouldn't be anxious to use them after the storm...they're certainly not going be be any better.

 

To paraphrase a bus driver there..."maybe the next bus comes, maybe it doesn't".

I love taking the bus. 75 cents. They don’t take dollar bills. Then walk down to the Paseo de la Princessa and follow it to the water and one of the most incredible fountains.

It's .35 cents exact change if you're a senior. Take # 53 which runs from the Isla Verde Beach to Condado to the terminal right beside the cruise port.

Thanks Fred&Lily for the info. Did you notice what the age for "senior" is? At age 61 I find sometimes I am and sometimes I'm not.

Take a taxi. Buses unreliable and taxi is not too expensive, though I don't recall the fare as we didn't go into OSJ last January.

We are staying in Isle Verde next to El San Juan hotel and have been using the bus for the past 2 days. They seem to run every 30 minutes, the bus drivers are very friendly and helpful when asked questions in English. During a trip to Old Juan yesterday the #5 did have to detour off the route due to crews working on restoring the power.

 

Take the bus, it's a great inexpensive way to get around, a great way to mingle with the locals and they have AC.

We used Uber during our stay in San Juan from 11/19/17 until 11/22/17.
