MontanaMike65 Posted January 10, 2018 #1 Share Posted January 10, 2018 Hello fellow cruisers, My wife and I are on Ruby Princess for the Mexican Riviera starting February 3. I booked reservations at Crown Grill for February 4 and 8, not realizing these are probably formal nights. We are not taking formal attire and thus need to avoid any venue requiring formal wear. I called Princess and was told we do not need to wear formal attire in the specialty restaurants on formal night. Can anyone confirm this? Thanks! Pam in CA Posted January 10, 2018 #3 Share Posted January 10, 2018 The dress is “smart casual.” You probably won’t be denied entrance in very casual clothing but the vast majority of passengers dress up in at least “Sunday best” for dining in the specialty restaurants. You’ll see everything from smart casual to formal in the restaurant.
Whirlybird Posted January 10, 2018 #4 Share Posted January 10, 2018 We were on Royal last month and had dinner in Crown Grill on the last formal night of the cruise. We decided to go with smart casual, had no problem getting seated at our reservation time. But we were the only table in the restaurant that was not in formal attire. pa247 Posted January 10, 2018 #5 Share Posted January 10, 2018 We were on Regal last month and ate at the Crown Grill. People came in and sat at table next to us, and I kid you not, the husband had on shorts, a t shirt and flip flops! The others in the party were dressed only slightly better. So my feeling is Smart Casual will probably look darn good. Sent from my iPad using Forums

Sent from my iPhone using Forums I also will confirm you will be ok without formal wear. My formal is a polo and jeans and have never been turned away at any specialty restaurant during formal nights even wearing a t-shirt and jeans. Yes I'm that guy haha. Crown grill is very delicious and enjoy! Take care! -Kysed
Steelers36 Posted January 10, 2018 #7 Share Posted January 10, 2018 For the gazillionth time, Princess Specialty Restaurants are Smart Casual all the time. If the OP is new to Princess, you can look up the FAQ's on Princess's website and read the Clothing Recommendations (see under "What to Bring" for one location). Many threads on here have discussed clothing ad nauseum. The craziest ones are often deleted by CC Admins. As mentioned, smart casual can include jeans and not be turned away. I would not try shorts and flip flops in any DR. Think of what you would wear to a "nice" or "upscale" restaurant. It seems that sometimes shorts might fly, but lots of reports of sending passengers back to cabin to change pants.

MontanaMike65 Posted January 10, 2018 Author #9 Share Posted January 10, 2018 Thanks everyone. Just didn’t want to take the rep’s word for it. Been steered wrong by various company reps way too many times. Sent from my iPhone using Forums
floridalover5623 Posted January 10, 2018 #10 Share Posted January 10, 2018 I't been years since we last went to a Specialty restaurant on a formal night but I wore jeans & a Polo shirt without any question. It seems a shame to eat at a Specialty restaurant on a formal night when the regular DR serves some of their better meals anyway. You might be able to change nights to a time when the menu in the DR is less appealing.
WVBill Posted January 10, 2018 #11 Share Posted January 10, 2018 It's funny that shorts is the one thing they draw the line at - it's also the one item of clothing that is completely invisible when sitting at the dining table.

Not having read the entire forum, I don't know if I can confirm that this was been answered a gazillion times. In fact, if it had been answered a gazillion times, I see no reason to answer it again, as a gazillion is not an actual number. But let's be a little more realistic, and assume it has been answered 50 times (maybe 100). I thought the purpose of an internet discussion board was to ask questions. Some may want to take the time to read through and verify if their question was asked before, some may want to simply ask it and come back in an hour and read the answers. If your fingers are numb from responding to the same question "a gazillion times" I suggest you simply don't answer it. If you've read everything there is to read on these boards over and over, I question why you still stick around. If you can't make other guests feel welcome, or offer informative replies, why troll around insulting and harshly and rudely putting people down. Rare Host CJSKIDS Posted January 10, 2018 #14 Share Posted January 10, 2018 We eat in the Crown Grill all the time when it's formal night. Just did again on the Regal 12/3/17 sailing and will agin on our upcoming 2/18 Crown sailing. Most people dining in there were casually dressed. Jeans/Pants with either a button down or polo shirt were what we saw on most men. A small few had on suits but for the most part it everyone was dressed casually. Women ran the gambit from skirts, to sundresses to pants.

Sent from my iPhone using Forums As you'll find out, the Princess DR is always low key. It's as formal as people want to make it. ROXIETHEHORSE Posted January 10, 2018 #16 Share Posted January 10, 2018 We always eat in a specialty restaurant or do the balcony dinner on formal nights. Too much extra clothing to bring and it's not really our thing.

I was going to reply myself, but didn’t want to take the time. Yes, I could do the research, but I actually work for a living and don’t want to read a ‘gazillion’ posts or go surfing around a lot. I figure if someone wants to be helpful and answer my question, they can do so, and not answer if they don’t want to. I appreciate all the helpful cruisers on this forum. firecrewcapt Posted January 10, 2018 #20 Share Posted January 10, 2018 FYI, our last cruise, Sept. '17 Panama Canal, we were told by the Maitre'D that shorts/flip flops are allowed on the first and last night in the MDR, he said it's due to passengers luggage may not arrive early enough or on the other end luggage already packed for disembarkation, at least on the Island Princess. I purposely used "gazillion" as a non-specific exaggeration. Not long ago, in the final months of 2017, it seemed like a clothing thread and ensuing discussion got going every other day. The problem is the Admins ended up deleting most of them as they descended into a lot of insults back and forth in some posts and I guess rather than exorcise some posts, they just killed it all. So, there ends up to be a lack of recent ones, but I have found CC Search works fairly well. Anyway, it would be nice if some of the more common topics got "stickies" and not just the now ancient smoking thread. I think it would give folks a lot of quick answers and reduce the number of multiple discussions. I did, however, go on to provide information and a reference point for the OP. I think it is always good to provide people more than a simple answer and give them reference points they may not be aware of or can help themselves in the future. At least the wine lovers think I am helpful.
