Any benefits to port shopping talks?

Really, on a beautiful sunny day, why waste your time (up to 1.5 hours) listening to the port shopping director go on and on about Tanzanite, etc... Really, who goes on ship to travel to Caribbean countries to buy expensive jewellery. Can you really trust Diamonds International. Who buys a ring worth thousands of dollars in a day without comparative shopping. . I have plenty of lovely jewellery bought at home. I can go back to my jeweller for cleaning, for just about anything. If you want to see what is offered in these ports, turn on the TV in your cabin after the port lecture. Of course, go if you want to be throw a T shirt or a trinket as the director tosses little giveaways into the audience or draws your name out of the basket. Again, you are wasting lovely at sea time to sit and listen to Tanzanite lessons. I guess I am jaded having cruised too long.

There is a long running case in Miami where a guy bought a diamond on the HA Eurodam that he knew was worth millions but they misquoted the price and he got it for $235K. The ship’s vendor refused to complete the sale when they discovered the mistake so he sued. He lost in the trial court twice but the court of appeals reversed both times. The most recent reversal was this week. Here is the opinion with a rehash of all the facts.

You will find out which merchants have paid the cruise line to be included in the talks.

This, it's a huge waste of time. I went to my first one on my first cruise and it was my last. Just them trying to get you to go to these often over priced places.

I went to it for the 1st time this month. And they actually had a lot of things you can win. They had internet, drink package, tshirts, jewlery, toys, johnny rockets and more. My niece won a small prize. She won a very neat hair thing set that we saw in port for $15. Originally we were not planning on getting off the ship while in nassua. However our other port was canceled the day before. So we decided to get off the ship and collect all the free coupons that we got at the talk. But the talk is long and and you most likely will not win. The theater was almost full. So it really depends on what your time is worth.

This is a fascinating contract law case. It would be a good one to unleash upon some 1L law students. I'm sure there will be a retrial given the dollars at stake.
