Manhattan cruise port/can I park a day early?

Hi

We will be driving from Montreal and we are thinking of staying at a hotel very close to port (walking distance; we are good walkers). All of those don't seem to offer parking. Could we park at the cruise port the day before our cruise and then we could leave our suitcase in the trunk and just walk out with a small carry-on. The day of the cruise we could get back to our car for suitcase and then check in. Is this possible? It seems like it would be easier than having to park at two different lots over two days.

The cruise parking lot is only open when ships are departing or arriving.
