cruisedreamin-gang Posted February 14, 2018 #1 Share Posted February 14, 2018 I've Google everywhere trying to find the width of this ship. I found length but not width. We are going with our grandchildren and thought we could let the grandkids measure it out and guess what we're doing

salty dingo Posted February 14, 2018 #3 Share Posted February 14, 2018 It's Panamax size, I believe.
asalligo Posted February 14, 2018 #4 Share Posted February 14, 2018 I don' think Wikipedia lists width on the Elation. She is 103 feet or at least was before the last refit added new balcony cabins. https://cruises.united.com/shipdetail.do?c=1&v=

Rare broberts Posted February 15, 2018 #8 Share Posted February 15, 2018 What is Panamax? Panamax is the largest size of ship that can transit using the old Panama Canal locks, i.e. not the ones that just opened. Beam must not exceed 32.31m (106 ft). Moviela Posted February 15, 2018 #9 Share Posted February 15, 2018 Carnival Elation is listed in ships registries as having a 31 or 36 meter beam (the width of a ship.) This is either 102 or 118 ft wide. I suppose either could be correct. However never believe what you read. Carnival Splendor is listed on one travel agency site as having a 380 ft beam! Hobbsey Posted February 15, 2018 #10 Share Posted February 15, 2018 It looks to be 103 feet at its widest place which would be the aft. Now this of course could be a general measurement being used for all Fantasy Class ships. The class did undergo structural changes as the class of ships progressed so it might be slightly different. Both are correct. The part that sits at the waterline (the part that matters to the canal locks) is narrower than the part above where the newer balconies were added. They stick out and make the ship wider up top. When people speak of a ship's beam, they are probably talking about the waterline measurement. However, if you are towing a large boat down the highway, the beam would be considered the absolute widest point. I don't think anyone is going to be towing the Elation down the road though. How else do they do those re-locations from east coast to west coast? I thought they got a really big RAM truck and... oh wait, yeah, that Panama Canal thing. ;p
