looking at getting special gift from my Baltic trip for my Granddaughter

Matryoshkas make great toys for toddlers - just go for the ones that are not heavily decorated and preferably etched or woodburned, not painted.

You can also get cheap unpainted sets so that she can paint them herself when she gets a little older.

There are also traditional woodcarved toys ("an old man and a bear", "chicken coop" - something like this https://schci.ru/bogorodskaya_igrushka.html) that make use of a wooden pendulum for moving action. These are good for toddlers too.
