Alaska0799 Posted April 30, 2018 #1 Share Posted April 30, 2018 We'd like to upgrade from our dated Garmin with an iPad app. We enjoy tracking areas of previous whale sightings along our cruise route. All suggestions appreciated!
Glaciers Posted April 30, 2018 #2 Share Posted April 30, 2018 We use maps.me.
SuperCrewBear Posted April 30, 2018 #3 Share Posted April 30, 2018 I agree: Maps.Me - you download the maps for the area where you'll be then you don't have to be online to use them. I'm not that familiar with an iPad though - does it have gps built in or do you have to be able to access wifi?
wolfie11 Posted April 30, 2018 #4 Share Posted April 30, 2018 Pricy at $50 but iNav gives you a complete set of nautical charts for the entire US including Alaska. It allows you to mark the chart with waypoints, etc, and will track the progress of the ship when you have it on. This app is one used by the pilot on the bridge to navigate the ship. thinfool Posted April 30, 2018 #5 Share Posted April 30, 2018 As you likely know, a 'wifi only' ipad has no GPS ability. Conversely, an Ipad with cellular capability is fully functional.
bob brown Posted May 1, 2018 #6 Share Posted May 1, 2018 You can purchase a fairly low cost GPS receiver for those ipads without built in GPS...some plug right in to the lightning connector, and use the ipad for power, others have their own batteries and connect wirelessly.... xlxo Posted May 4, 2018 #8 Share Posted May 4, 2018 Another vote for Maps.me. I also download Google Maps. There have been times where one product misses out information found on another. Sent from my BBB100-1 using Forums mobile app
Alaska0799 Posted May 5, 2018 Author #9 Share Posted May 5, 2018 Just had a suggestion to check out a Navionics app. Does anyone have experience with Navionics or insight to offer? All input is appreciated! Thanks so much.
Essexman Posted July 16, 2018 #10 Share Posted July 16, 2018 Navionics have a free 2 week trial which I used recently on a cruise in Alaska on my I pad. I found it worked well as long as you use it near the balcony. You have to download the maps to cover the area you need in advance. I found it took about 6 download squares to cover the inside passage route. It gives speed and loads of information about where you are and the sea underneath. After 2 weeks it just expires you do not have to cancel a subscription.
