Stayed for one night pre-cruise. Very nice hotel near the port. Beautiful pool area! Was disappointed with the food at the Metropal restaurant. Did not compare to other PR restaurants we have visited in the past. Nothing to do nearby but plenty to keep you busy at the hotel!

Just so no one is confused there is no longer a "casino" at the Sheraton...also I certainly would and have opted to eat at the many local restaurants near the hotel...never the hotel ;)

Sorry I have to disagree...there is nothing at the hotel to keep us busy...we book it for being a good location to Old Town.

Ashland, you are confusing two hotels. The OP is talking about the Sheraton near the PanAm port, which does have a casino and not much around it. You are thinking of the Sheraton Old San Juan which Is right in Old San Juan but has no casino.

Sitting at our window of the Old San Juan Sheraton, I can see the one across the bay.

If I were going to an event at the convention center and then cruising, that other hotel would be a great option.

Well thanks for clearing up any confusion....It certainly wasn't clear to me which hotel the OP was referring to...glad you figured it out.

Was there two weeks ago. I am referring to the hotel in the title that is near the Pan American Pier and convention center. Booked thru Hotwire and had a very good rate for a 4 Star Hotel. If you want to be at the beach or in Old San Juan this is not the hotel for you. If you are looking for a clean upscale hotel for 1 night pre-cruise it was a great option for the price.

Thanks. That’s the one I was looking at on Google Maps (it said permanently closed). Good to know that it’s still open.

  • 3 weeks later...
We booked the Sheraton Casino Hotel near the Pan American Pier for our cruise on Dec 15th on the Freedom. Pan American is the pier the Freedom cruises out of, correct?

Yes, it is.

But do note- you can't really walk from the hotel to the ship. Not sure if you were hoping you could, but it would be really hard to drag luggage all that way.

No we weren't planning on walking to the ship. We had heard bad traffic stories so we figured we would get as close to the ship as possible.

Thanks a lot!

If that's what you are worried about, I'd stay in Old San Juan. There are only a few events where traffic is going to be so bad that you could miss the ship or have a huge problem getting to your hotel. Mid December isn't one of those times.

And spending an evening in the area is worth it. The bars and restaurants are far better in Old San Juan, and then the idea of just walking out and wandering around to see the historic sights, well....

We are planning on doing it, again, in July- which would be the 4th time we've spent a night (or two) in Old San Juan in 2018.

The funny thing is we booked the Sheraton in OSJ 1st, then thought it might be better to be closer to the port so we changed & now we might end up changing back to OSJ. Thanks for the tips!

I stay at this Sheraton for work (as recently as last weekend). It’s a modern, convention center hotel. The area is under development and in the future it will be packed with restaurants, entertainment, parks and condos. But right now, there’s not much in the near vicinity except the convention center, a few chain restaurants, and 2 other hotels. It’s not a bad place to spend the night, but it’s not the best for those planning on sightseeing or exploring near the hotel.

Actually, traffic going into the Pan Am pier can sometimes be a nightmare. I was at the Sheraton Convention center hotel last weekend and all I saw was a slow, long, constant line of cars going into the access road. This went on for most of the day. Staying at the nearby Sheraton or Hyatt hotels can help a bit, but you'll still be in a traffic jam for a few minutes. Keep in mind this is with only RCCL's FOS in port. With two ships in, it should be considerably worse. I was actually rolling my eyes after seeing that since I'm booked for the NCL Epic on March 2020. And that ship will be nose to tail with the FOS on that day as well...DOH!!

The traffic around the Sheraton can be a nightmare if there’s anything going on at the Convention Center. I was there a few weeks ago when Comic Con was going on and the traffic was horrendous. It took us over an hour to get to the hotel even though we could see it from the car. But if there’s nothing going on, traffic is not an issue. I was there last night again for work and it took us 15 minutes to go from the airport to the hotel.

We are staying here now and I think it’s a great hotel. Very close to everything. We haven’t needed a cab once. Lots to do and see, plenty of authentic restaurants and tons of shops and sightseeing opportunities very close by. I’m very glad we stayed here instead of somewhere further away that would have required a cab to visit Old San Juan.

Are you at the Sheraton Old San Juan, or at the Sheraton Convention Center? The Convention Center one requires a cab to get to Old San Juan (or pretty much anywhere), and besides the Metropol restaurant at the hotel, and a Longhorn and Olive Garden a few minutes away, there are really no food options within walking distance unless you’re willing to take a lengthy walk across a busy highway into Santurce or Condado.

By the way, I did take Uber from the Sheraton to the Condado Vanderbilt for an event, and the ride was only $3.47!

Sorry, but you are not staying at the hotel in the title, you are staying at Sheraton Old San Juan. The hotel in the title is the one next to the port and the convention center (the word "Casino" is the giveaway).

We are staying at the Hyatt House in December. The Hyatt is near the Convention Center and we were planning to walk to Casita Miramar for dinner. Is this doable?

Yes, in fact, one of my coworkers walked to Casita Miramar from the hotel a few weeks ago. He said that the walk wasn’t bad. He did have to walk across that busy highway so be careful.
