sunshine state Posted May 21, 2018 #1 Share Posted May 21, 2018 Was wondering if the upper berth stays open all day or is it put away until night. Trying to decide whether to get a cabin with an upper berth or just a couch for my daughter to sleep on. Thanks for any info!
gerelmx Posted May 21, 2018 #2 Share Posted May 21, 2018 They do Twice daily service (makeup and turndown), so in the morning will be stored and at night will be open

RCKM43 Posted May 22, 2018 #4 Share Posted May 22, 2018 Better to do berth if you are ok with that choice. It is actually pretty comfortable and has a light up there they can turn on and off. They put it away every morning and take it down at evening turndown. Whereas they always leave the couch set up like a bed and you have to ask several times to get it put back in the morning. sunshine state Posted May 22, 2018 Author #5 Share Posted May 22, 2018 Thank you for your replies! Are the upper berths comfortable for a 23 year old female or would the couch be better. It seems the cabins are a bit cramped so trying to decide if it would make a difference to have my daughter sleep in an upper berth instead of the couch. dgcruises Posted May 22, 2018 #6 Share Posted May 22, 2018 (edited) If it was me I would sooner be on the couch An image I found doing a search. https://boards.cruisecritic.com.au/showthread.php?t=1190152 Edited May 22, 2018 by Goldberry link
CruisingChick Posted May 22, 2018 #7 Share Posted May 22, 2018 Having done both when we traveled with our son I would definitely do upper berth.
RCKM43 Posted May 23, 2018 #8 Share Posted May 23, 2018 That picture above is not very accurate. Here is a better picture for comparison. The top berth and the couch both made up. The top berth is the same size as the couch. I think but could be wrong it holds some like 300 or 500 lbs. but size wise is the same as the could in length and width. I slept in them in college when traveling on Celebrity many years ago with no issue. Sent from my iPad using Forums

mandream Posted May 23, 2018 #11 Share Posted May 23, 2018 I have seen them leave it as a bed during day and not return it to a couch. Sent from my SM-T350 using Forums mobile app They often try. If they do, we ask them to return it to a couch. Only once did the SA seem annoyed with the request. Mike

Sent from my iPhone using Forums They have for our last four cruises. We just ask to put it back to the couch. Sometimes they are great about it, others not so much and need reminders. The berth though always goes away. Sent from my iPad using Forums
sunshine state Posted May 26, 2018 Author #13 Share Posted May 26, 2018 Thank you for your replies. I have booked a cabin with both a upper berth and a couch. Looking forward to my cruise at the end of June!!

We used the upper berth for my 18 year old daughter last year on Eclipse. Worked well for us, keeping couch free (although limited headroom). The upper berth remained in position all cruise, it was not put back during the day.

My 22 and 19 year old's, say the bed is defiantly better....a proper mattress. It is a thin mattress only on the pull out couch. It also gets in the way, if your up earlier and the youngsters are having a lie in. When we had a balcony cabin, you had to step over the couch bed to get out onto the balcony. Not good for either of us.
phoenix_dream Posted May 27, 2018 #16 Share Posted May 27, 2018 I tried sleeping on the upper berth - hated it. Never felt safe up there (although I'm sure I was). Particularly awkward if the seas are rockin' and rollin'. I vote for couch for me.

RCKM43 Posted May 27, 2018 #18 Share Posted May 27, 2018 Looks very crowded..esp if upper berth person needs to use the bathroom It actually isn’t. They don’t keep that draw open. It has always been closed for us. The berth doesn’t come out farther than the couch does. Sent from my iPad using Forums
