short timer Posted June 17, 2018 #1 Share Posted June 17, 2018 We are arriving at 7 am and need to be at Newark airport by 11:30. (Airline changed our flight). We have a HAL transfer but wonder if a cab would be faster. Is that a reasonable time line? We will be exiting a 30 day cruise from Copenhagen. Thanks
Rare Turtles06 Posted June 17, 2018 #2 Share Posted June 17, 2018 Hi short timer, We are on that crossing with you. A really great place to ask your question is over on the East Coast Departures board; the folks there are experts in helping people deal with just the sort of question you are posing. A couple of possible problems: (1) when a ship returns to the US from Europe after half a year, it can sometimes take a while before the ship is cleared for anyone to disembark; (2) we are returning on a weekday morning, so that means rush hour traffic. In terms of your HAL transfer, what time has HAL said is the earliest you should book a flight? Again, I think asking over on the East Coast Departures board will get you some good info. Looking forward to meeting you soon.
sammiedawg Posted June 18, 2018 #3 Share Posted June 18, 2018 A cab is faster. Self disembark when the ship is cleared. You will have to cross 12th Avenue to get in the cab line, there is a crosswalk and a traffic light. There should be a steady flow of cabs. Sometimes we walk up to 11th Avenue to avoid the line. Or use a car hire. Uber, Lyft, we often use Carmel. The driver usually calls you to tell you which corner he can get to.
catl331 Posted June 18, 2018 #4 Share Posted June 18, 2018 I would cancel the transfer and take a cab or Uber/Lyft
Rare Hlitner Posted June 18, 2018 #5 Share Posted June 18, 2018 Yes, a taxi would be faster but getting to EWR for an 11:30 flight is not going to be a problem no matter what form of transportation you utilize. Most of the early morning traffic is coming into the city from NJ so getting through the Lincoln Tunnel should not be a major problem. Barring unforeseen circumstances you should be able to get from the port to EWR in about 30-40 minutes. If you are on your way by 9:30 or a bit later all should be fine. Personally, we would probably opt for Uber... But even Uber will cost about $60 (for the entire car). Hank
