Hello will be doing a southern carribean cruise on the Freedom.

When it finishes is it easy to get a taxi at the port? (to the airport)

Does uber work in San Juan?

I am not sure about Uber, but we have done several sailing out of San Juan and getting a taxi is very easy and it is a flat rate to the airport. It will cost about $20.00 (per taxi, not per person) plus $1.00 per piece of luggage.

Just off Freedom yesterday.

 

We stayed in Condado area the night before and we used an Uber XL to the Pan American Pier for about $10.

 

We took a cab from Airport to hotel for $23 (including two pieces of luggage) and we also took a cab from the Pier to the airport for the same price.

 

We walked out of the terminal and were in a cab less than 5 minutes and at the airport within 30 minutes.

 

Be careful leaving the terminal because you will be swamped with tour operators for local tours but just go out to the left and you will see the Taxi sign.

 

The Taxi driver told us as of right now, you cannot UBER out of the cruise terminal or from the Airport but he said that will likely change.

On a slightly separate note is San Juan pretty safe to wander about in old town etc?

We have a couple days there before cruise.

We've never had a problem wandering around Old San Juan.

I have never felt unsafe walking around Old San Juan.

We've been told there is serious animosity between taxi and Uber drivers so we're cautious about where we use Uber. Usually we take a taxi from the airport but use Uber pretty much everywhere else. On one visit there was a taxi stand right at the entrance to our hotel with 2 to 3 taxis lined up everyday so we used the taxis most of the time. Whether this is really an issue is probably debatable. We just didn't feel the need to find out.

As with any place you visit be vigilant and watch what you do. That being said we have never had any issues in any area of Puerto Rico we have visited. We love the trolley that takes you to the Forts and around old town,

I know the OP asked specifically for the airport, but yesterday, when we got off the Freedom, we went to Old San Juan- which was $14 for the two of us and 4 bags. Then $23 from Old San Juan to the airport.
