Kartgv Posted July 16, 2018 #1 Share Posted July 16, 2018 Many people in the past have talked about how exciting it was to view the lava flowing into the sea from tours operated by some of the local small boat owners. Most of these tours operate without incident, but the Coast Guard in the past was warned to make sure the boat and its captain are certified and are upfront and proactive about explaining their safety precautions. One of these tours didn't fare so well this morning. The boat reportedly went beyond the official safety zone and was hit by falling debris from a lava explosion, resulting in multiple injuries. It didn't happen to be a group from a cruise ship, but the same concerns apply. Here's a link to the article in West Hawaii Today, the Kona newspaper: http://www.westhawaiitoday.com/2018/07/16/hawaii-news/at-least-10-hurt-in-lava-explosion-near-tour-boat/ Please be very cautious if you decide to try one of these tours! Rare puppycanducruise Posted July 18, 2018 #4 Share Posted July 18, 2018 That's a little too close to the action. Sometimes we forget that Mother Nature is very powerful. Hope everyone on that tour boat recovers.
