Gwendy Posted October 17, 2018 #1 Share Posted October 17, 2018 Looking at a cruise round trip to Japan next year. Website says Quantam out of Shanghai is geared to Chinese market with Mandarin speakers and food to cater to this market. Has anyone done a cruise out of Shanghai? Are the shows in English, announcements in English or all Chinese? Thanks in advance for any info.
CanobieFan Posted October 17, 2018 #2 Share Posted October 17, 2018 Not from China, but having gone from Singapore... Everything was still in English first and then Chinese. Food was more Asian themed but also in the Jammer was everything you'd find on any other sailing (but with one section more focused on Asian food. So much delicious Indian food) they also had what seemed like an unofficial seating area in the Jammer. I did a five day and don't recall any shows... But they did the street party and such... But we never saw the dedicated Night Club open. There was also a mini buffet setup in the casino. Something not seen on my other sailings. Highlight was accidentally walking in on a group of older women doing their morning aerobics / exercises.... To completely uncensored Nicki Minaj songs ❤️

Hi, This is listed a "culturally enriching cruise" to immerse yourself into the culture of the area you are visiting. This ship is a closed loop cruise, out of Shanghai. The "official language" on the ship is English. However, it still is the secondary language. If 95% of the customers speak Mandarin, and 5% of the customers speak only English, then it would only make sense that the shows, and entertainment are geared to the majority, and not the minority. Yes, the shows are mostly in Mandarin, with some English thrown in, quickly, when needed. Most shows are more visual so it's not a big issue, not for me anyway. As far as the food, yes, RCCL adapts the dining experience, to the 95% of the guests. But really, why would you go to China, and not want to eat Chinese food? Wouldn't that be part of the culture experience? All announcements are in Mandarin, followed by English. All signs are both languages. This was one of the best cruise experiences that I had. I love to travel. However, if you do not want to be part of the culture, than this is not the ship for you. Too many people take this trip with the expectations that it is exactly like trips in the USA or Europe. It is not. You should also take a few nights in Shanghai prior the trip. This will get you used to the culture differences.

The_Big_M Posted October 18, 2018 #5 Share Posted October 18, 2018 Agree with comments/review above. As for communication, aside from shows they know they have different sets of guests and cater for both.
