amisup Posted December 13, 2018 #1 Share Posted December 13, 2018 (edited) Looking to travel Jul 2019. We are looking for porthole room for family of 3. And my only options are these. How would a OG room on deck 5 (forward porthole view) compare with a OF room on deck 4 ( mid ship porthole view) as far as bumpy ride , waves and motion sickness is concerned ? RD29P5 Posted December 13, 2018 #2 Share Posted December 13, 2018 You'll be fine with either of those choices. You will be in sheltered water's for most of the trip. While waves and swells do happen, the chances of rough sea's on that trip are minimized by the inside passage route. Depending on which way you choose the only open ocean is the Gulf of Alaska, and even that is somewhat sheltered.
amisup Posted December 14, 2018 Author #3 Share Posted December 14, 2018 Thank you. I really appreciate your response ! You made a great point there. I had been on Caribbean before and it can get quite bumpy. What about the noise from the engines ? Do you hear them more on deck 4 than deck 5 ? Also deck 5 near the front is close to theatre - does that get noisy ?
gymbomb Posted December 14, 2018 #4 Share Posted December 14, 2018 I would look for a room where you can tell from the deck plans what is above and below you. The only really bad room I've ever had was a 4th floor cabin on the Dawn where we were above the ship's laundry facility (per our room steward) and hydraulic equipment sounds below us woke us up multiple times every night.

Dreamer115 Posted December 15, 2018 #6 Share Posted December 15, 2018 Although I have yet to go to Alaska, I do know that mid ship is better than forward as far as motion is concerned.
Rare www3traveler Posted December 16, 2018 #7 Share Posted December 16, 2018 If you can would Not book on either Deck 4 or 5 for other reasons than motion. Mid ship Deck for is the Medical Center. Deck 4 is usually where they set the gangways for shore excursions. Very noisy getting them set out (metal being scrapped across metal). Forward Deck 5 would be under the theater--- yes noisy especially if you are trying to get small children to go to sleep. Mid ship Deck 5 and aft Deck 5, you would be under the restaurants.
