Mimiya11 Posted January 4, 2019 #1 Share Posted January 4, 2019 Will be spending one night pre cruise and two nights post cruise in Amsterdam. Ideally would like to find a location to stay that is walkable to key highlights, yet not overly touristy crowded. Is there such a place, or am I dreaming? We are four adults and are also looking into an apartment type hotel. Thanks for any help in advance.

Ine Posted January 5, 2019 #3 Share Posted January 5, 2019 Walkable to key highlights means centre or close to center and yes it will be busy!
drakestravels Posted January 7, 2019 #4 Share Posted January 7, 2019 I stayed at the DoubleTree by Hilton Amsterdam Centraal Station. Great location and walkable. Anything walkable to cruise port will be in a a good central location since ships dock right at the center of town.
Rare John Bull Posted January 7, 2019 #5 Share Posted January 7, 2019 Most convenient is close to Damrak, which runs between Centraal Station and Dam Square. Most convenient also means busiest - especially Dam Square. An excellent compromise would be west of Damrak, along Brouwersgracht or on one of the canals just off Brauersgracht - this is mainly residential and small hotels & short-stay rental apartments, with a few larger hotels. But be aware that properties are tall and narrow, and stairs tend to be the same, so choose a low floor or one of the few with an elevator. Very pleasant & laid-back but doesn't attract the hordes https://goo.gl/maps/tjp67i62y642 JB
Entropy Posted January 13, 2019 #6 Share Posted January 13, 2019 Look at a map of Amsterdam. The city is a series of u-shaped canals. The closer to the center of the canals, the closer you will be to the center of most everything, somewhere between Dam Square and the Centraal station is ideal. Anywhere within the canals is walkable. There's a tram that goes from the Centraal station South, you can use that to get around.
mauimary Posted January 14, 2019 #7 Share Posted January 14, 2019 Last Summer we stayed at the Raddison Blu in Amsterdam. Very convenient. Lots of nearby restaurants. You can get a canal cruise just a couple of blocks away. We were very happy here. We took the train in from the airport. From the Main train station you may want to take a taxi to the hotel depending on the amt of luggage you are carrying. It is walkable but it’s over cobblestone streets. If you have just come off an overnight flight you may not want to walk it. Very easy to take train into Amsterdam from the airport.
