Canuker Posted January 11, 2019 #1 Share Posted January 11, 2019 (edited) We're booked on the Reflection. I'm looking at a photograph of her and the balcony front (not side, I hope) panels seem to be transparent, as I can see what appear to be peoples legs who are standing on their balconies. What sort of privacy does a balcony offer, please? If it's sea day, I suppose it doesn't really matter. Edited January 11, 2019 by Canuker
helen haywood Posted January 11, 2019 #2 Share Posted January 11, 2019 Depends what cabin you have. The balconies have a glass wall on the front of the balcony and solid opaque walls on the sides. You can hear people on adjoining balconies. If someone is leaning on their balcony rail they can see other balconies rails. S Class aft cabins are stepped down so those overhead of you can look down into your balcony. If a ship is docked across from you they can see directly into your balcony and your room if the curtains aren't drawn. Cabins on the humps can see into cabins on the setback. twodjs Posted January 11, 2019 #4 Share Posted January 11, 2019 Balcony fronts under the railing are almost always clear glass. The rare exception would be where the ship structure requires a steel lower panel, usually toward the very front or back of the ship.

On our cruise in November on the Eclipse we were in cabin 1124 on the hump and could definitely not see into any cabins. We could see a little of the balcony on a few of the cabins, but could not even see the cabin doors.
helen haywood Posted January 12, 2019 #6 Share Posted January 12, 2019 If you are in a slant balcony on the hump you can see the indented cabins either in front of behind you depending on whether you are on the forward or aft hump.

While some balconies offer more privacy than others, there is no privacy at all when the kid in the neighboring cabin leans around the divider at the railing and looks right into your balcony, and into your cabin as well if you have the curtain open. If you happen to be out on your balcony looking right back at the time, they are embarrassed and retreat pretty quickly, but there is no way of knowing how many times they do that or for how long when you are not out there to catch them. We have been on other ships where the dividers extended out beyond the railings so people could not peep around them into their neighbor's balcony. Also, on the deeper balconies on Celebrity ships the dividers often consist of several panels, and there may be gaps between the panels so your neighbor can easily see into your balcony, even when it is not intentional. One poster mentioned that he brings along a roll of duct tape to tape up those gaps between the divider panels. Then there was the poster who asked just what you are planning to do out on your balcony that you don't want anyone to see.
bobndee Posted January 13, 2019 #8 Share Posted January 13, 2019 There can be no expectation of privacy on a ship's balcony. Don't forget that the security cameras watching are everywhere, including balconies.

We had gaps on the dividing panels and our neighbour peeped through a couple of times. I mentioned it to our butler and tape was soon applied!
