Sunbury Plantation in Barbados

I have only been to one plantation many yeas ago, and really enjoyed checking it out.

I understand Barbados has the Sunbury Plantation.  If you have been there within the past year, is it worth checking out, in YOUR opinion?  Is it close to the ship port, or do we need to take a Taxi to get there?

The Sunbury Planation House is over in St. Philip, about 10-12 miles east of the harbour.

There are busses that go near there but make many stops along the way.  A taxi would be the best with your limited island time. Perhaps US$20 each way (?).

Prior to the fire there in 1996 (?) it was a pristine example of an early plantation life complete with all of the furniture and accessories that were in a home of this type in the 1600s. Spectacular to actually see these everyday articles up close.

Today, those details are gone, having been replaced with general furnishings and articles donated by many on the island.  One room has dozens of cameras which weren’t a period item.

Having seen the original Sunbury house many times I’m always disappointed when I return of late.

Don’t let me dissuade you, it is still worthwhile to visit, but you may want to see something else now and save Sunbury for another time.

I think taxi fare

will be considerably more than US$20 ea. way

especially since you may need to have him wait on you?
Sunbury is not the easiest place to catch a taxi!

It's out in the middle of sugar cane fields...

Your best bet may be to buy in to a tour that is doing Sunbury already..

or get together your own group of 10 or 12 ppl

and hire one of those mini-coaches I see around these days

SUNBURY PLTN. HOUSE

Built around 1660 by one of the first settlers on the island

and steeped in history, this 300-year-old Sugar Estate

is set in beautiful gardens, offers a taste of Barbadian history,

plus interesting displays of antiques

and a unique collection of horse drawn carriages!
