As for why they disable the HDMI ports, my guess is they don't want people that don't have a foggy clue about electronics (which is the majority of cruisers) playing with the wiring. No one knows for sure.

Can  you imagine the amount of calls to Guest Services if it were allowed.  Past guests leaving the TVs set up for HDMI, then the new guests trying to watch the TV and can't figure out why they can't see anything.

Wouldn’t it to the responsibility of the stateroom steward to reset it to the safety channel and the deck supervisor to confirm the safety channel is being aired when in between guests? Or am I confusing Carnival with a different line?

Hotels and ships using hospitality model TV turn off the inputs to prevent damage to the TV by recalcitrant guests who plug in devices called zappers that pulse high voltage into the TV. Sometimes too guests will complain that the TV damaged their game console. There is also the problem of getting all the TV's running the same software. Some newer instillations have IP connections, but older systems require a room engineer to take a thumb drive to the TV and flash the TV to the personality desired by management. It is not that they don't want you to play games, they just don't want to support your use of the TV to do so.
