Maya Chan or Almaplena

We will be in Costa Maya in May.  Want a quiet place to enjoy the beach, good food and fun drinks.  We do like to snorkel. From all that I have read, it comes down to either Maya Chan or Almaplena.  Both are $59, both include transportation, both are 20 minutes away.  Which is best for two older women?

We love Maya Chan and have been there 3 times now. That being said, if you are looking to snorkle, you will want to find another beach. When we were in Costa Maya this past February (2019) the sargassum was pretty bad on most beaches. Hope it's better when you go.

50/50. flip a coin.  Almaplena is further south than Maya Chan.

Unfortunately, as ransrider has said, neither rare good for snorkeling. Both have sandy bottoms.  Either are great for relaxing, and service though.

We loved Maya Chan, but the sea grass and murky water made snorkeling impossible. 😞 It was still a gorgeous place!

When were you there?  Could you enter the water or was the sea grass too bad to do so?

The sea grass is nearly always there. 

 

The seaweed comes and goes but was particularly bad last year and lasted from end of Feb to late fall. This year some days have been bad, some not so bad - study the web cam.
