Really depends on which cruise line and which TA (i.e., any status as a "preferred partner"). Our experience (including cabin assignment) has varied from 7-10 days.

A couple of months ago we decided on an O cruise, and there was one cabin left in our desired category.  Our TA was in Beijing.  I called Oceania, put that cabin on a courtesy hold, and it was good for 10 days.
