High Water Changes

The AMERICAN QUEEN has had to alter her trip to Red Wing, MN due to the flooding on the upper Mississippi. The boat's itinerary has been changed to have the trip which was scheduled to  travel to Red Wing now end up on the Ohio River at Cincinnati on July 15.  Passengers will  get to steam up the beautiful Ohio to the Queen City and take in unparalleled scenery along with experiencing first hand the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers' lock and dam system on that river.

The AQ will leave Cincinnati this coming Monday, July 15 headed for St. Louis which will put her back on schedule if she can make St. Louis the following Monday.

Interesting.  We are doing the August Red Wing to New Orleans.  I wonder how they will handle it.

If the water goes down there should be no problem. It all sort of depends on when the rains finally end. Hopefully, they have as there is plenty of time till August for the Upper Mississippi to return to pool

And I'm hoping that between now and then New Orleans doesn't get hit with a hurricane.

Luckily we are 'go with the flow' cruisers who know how to make lemonade, when necessary.

Yesterday we disembarked from what was supposed to be the 21 day "Mighty Mississippi" cruise.  Heading north from New Orleans, we had to divert over to the Tennessee and Ohio Rivers, ending up in Cincinnati instead of Red Wing, MN.  This was a trip we booked in February 2018 and really looked forward to.

Were we disappointed?  Heck, yes.  Could we blame AQSC for what Mother Nature did?  No.  We, along with most of our fellow passengers to whom we spoke, made the best of it.

AQSC revised our return travel plans at their expense, did not charge us for the airport bus (which they usually do), and gave us a 25% credit for another trip, as well as a 5 or 10% discount for booking that future trip on board.  We booked a Victory Cruise Line Great Lakes trip for 2020.

Looking at the passage contract, they did not have to do a darn thing.  They could have dumped us off anywhere and not given us back a nickel.  If I read it correctly, they could even have cancelled the whole trip and not refunded our money!

We think they made the best of a difficult situation.
