How terrible! We were considering the Sea to Sky Gondola next weekend prior to our cruise. Thankfully no one was injured but what sad news that the cable was deliberately severed and caused massive damage.

Agree, hope they catch the culprit and are able to prosecute him/her/them.

This is absolutely devastating for us here, both from a tourist attraction/monetary point of view, and the criminality of it all. We rode up last year for our anniversary weekend and it was stunning and wonderful. Can you imagine if the cable had not broken through at the time, but later when the cars were filled with people, we would be looking at an entirely different set of circumstances and charges.

Nope - new article in today's local paper mentioned that they are now reconsidering their plans to expand the top of the attraction with a covered trail (meant to happen over this winter) due to the lost income etc. Engineers continue to check for safety of the whole setup (it's now up to 20 of the 30 cars needing replaced) before it can possibly get restarted... I'd be utterly stunned if the rest of this season was not a total bust, with (assuming insurance covers enough that it's affordable to restart at all) service resuming in spring next year the earliest sensible guess. If it was just fixing the cable that would be one thing, but replacing the cars... there just aren't many folks making these things so ramping up production to make another 20+ available is going to take some time, even if they actually have a choice of provider (keeping any existing ones likely means having to buy more from the same manufacturer to guarantee they all balance exactly as expected...)

Part of the issue is that they have not even revealed where the cable was cut from to the public - but it was indirectly alluded to that it happened somewhere in the middle, where there are no cameras, and given that it's a lengthy cable that crosses provincial park and crown lands so it would be impractical to put a full security setup on the entire ride and still remain remotely profitable, ultimately if they don't find out WHY it was cut or by whom the risk remains of it happening again and again if it's some sort of protest or attack on the owners...
