Effectively, I was a qualified ICU nurse, it was a medical escort role that dealt with medical and trauma cases. I routinely travelled up to 3 times a week on European hops and continental once a week due to layovers. I have brought back people with a range of conditions and a range of ages. One case in particular involved a 25 year old woman who was a conference visit to Nairobi. Ended up with a slipped disc and dysentery, ironic really as the conference was regarding water purification and supply. Confined to bed and as she was concerned about the treatment prescribed, she was correct by the way, the hospital even refused painkillers. It took me 3 days to negotiate her hospital bills. She had company insurance but no repatriation. The point I am making is that prior to her incident she was perfectly fit with no health issues. One cannot predict what may happen on any trip. With regards to cancellation insurance it is down to personal choice if you can safely predict that nothing untoward will happen then fine. All too often a cruise is booked a couple of years in advance. Ours is in Jan 2021 on the Navigator. I was made redundant last week, fortunately we have sufficient resources to ensure at the moment we will continue with the booking. Suffice to say we do not travel without insurance including cancellation and read the fine print as well. Thanks for your post. Will you be joining the Navigator in Honolulu? gnomie1 Posted November 21, 2019 #54 Share Posted November 21, 2019 I do purchase travel insurance (and I am "relatively young") - I had to use the insurance twice, once when my father passed away unexpectedly three days before my planned trip and once when I developed pneumonia the day before a cruise to Antarctica - both times I was able to get all my expenses reimbursed with minimal time on my part. Since both cancelled trips were not exactly cheap, I consider it a worthwhile investment. On the other hand, an acquaintance (in his 40's) has been dealing with his credit card insurance for the past couple of years and has now hired a lawyer because of the problems encountered - while in the South Pacific a group of friends were involved in a serious accident and three required medical transport back to the States. The family of my acquaintance was dealing with the benefits administrator for the credit card company and report that the experience was a nightmare. The insurance covered transportation expenses up to $100K of the transport SELECTED by the insurance company which was later learned to have charged more than double the average price, the balance becoming the responsibility of the acquaintance. Another member of the group was also brought home by air ambulance and had traditional travel insurance and all expenses were covered without any problems. The peace of mind knowing that in the event of an medical emergency I am covered is worth the premium.

Ladys Mom Posted November 21, 2019 #56 Share Posted November 21, 2019 For shorter, less expensive cruises we are using credit card insurance for trip cancellation and interruption. In addition, we carry a separate medical and repatriation policy that is quite inexpensive, but will take care of everything if we need to get home because of illness or injury. So a return to biking when I hit 50, 11 years later still riding albeit now on a Triumph Tiger. Previous was a ZX1400, got to the point where the ride out involved a visit to the chiropractor due to the racing position 😂. Strange thing was and pertinent to the post, my other half increased my life assurance when I returned to biking, as you never know. Do you ride? Mini bikes to dirt bikes to street bikes. Usually Japanese sport-type bikes...not full race styles, though, as even in my 30s my back couldn’t take it for more than an hour or so. Last ‘hooligan bike’ was a Honda 919. Loved it, but moved to Harley Davidsons when I turned 50 and I haven’t looked back. Currently on a CVO Road Glide that’s fast, smooth, and all-day comfortable. orvil Posted November 23, 2019 #63 Share Posted November 23, 2019 UUNetBill, Surely your exaggerate. "Ah Ha!" I thought AM was a trophy wife. I would have thought her special event would have started with a "4". We'll just miss one another in MIA. You will be getting off Explorer and we'll be getting on. Bon voyage. I have a new "best friend" for you - one of my friends was seriously wondering why on earth I would be looking at pictures of motorcycles and then looked closer - if you let him take a ride, he will let you take a spin in his original owner '67 Shelby GT350 (great car, been in it a number of times, although never driven it)
