Cessna140 Posted February 29, 2020 #1 Share Posted February 29, 2020 Just returned from our cruise that stopped for the day in Barbados. We have been before and only wanted to spend the day at Bathsheba on the opposite side of the island. You can't really swim there, the water is too rough. Some of the locals do surf there though. It's a lovely place devoid of noisy crowds except for the occasional tour bus that stops for 15 minutes. There is a small restaurant there. We took a taxi there for $100 round trip. It was about a half hour ride each way.
2PinaColadas Posted March 2, 2020 #2 Share Posted March 2, 2020 $100 for taxi there and back! Sounds like a lot. Was that USD or Barbados $$?
Cessna140 Posted March 2, 2020 Author #3 Share Posted March 2, 2020 It was US Dollars......pricey I know but for us it was worth it.
EatonDoolittle Posted March 2, 2020 #4 Share Posted March 2, 2020 Thanks for posting the pix of Bathsheba, it is indeed beautiful. The town is also fun to explore and the Round House restaurant is historic and a great place for a meal. We had a guide once drive us out to this cliff and have us get out of the van. He said "This is the cleanest air you will ever breathe - is has come across the ocean from Africa with no land in the way". I thought it was quite poetic, and wow, what a view. And yes, magnificent, clean air. This is a perfect example of why I hate to see all the posts that ask for the closest (fill in the blank: bar, beach, shopping, snorkeling...) to the pier. You have spent a lot of money and come a long way - why on earth wouldn't you explore once you arrive at a port? Yes, it's a ways across the island, but IMO, could / should easily be tagged onto a private tour - see some of the island, stop at a few places along the way (i.e. St Nicholas Abbey for rum tasting...), lunch or cocktails in Bathsheba, then back to the ship. Barbados has so much to offer. With a couple or just a small group you could accomplish this for well under $100 per person.
bessinfl Posted March 3, 2020 #5 Share Posted March 3, 2020 I think you can take a public bus to Bathsheba. Does anyone know if that’s the case?
Cessna140 Posted March 3, 2020 Author #6 Share Posted March 3, 2020 I also looked into the public bus to get to Bathsheba....but didn't feel comfortable going that route. There are some posts on cruise critic about it so just try a search. Good luck! If you go bring water shoes of some type with you. There are lots of rocks along the shore.

If he waited a few hours for you, before your return.. you were paying for his time as well. Besides -it's only money.

IF you're staying on the island, getting into Bridgetown, so you can take the No. 6 route over to Bathsheba (an hourly service, both ways) is practical - but if you're ashore for just 6-8 hrs. you're probably cutting it a bit close... Mind you, you could probably take a taxi over to Bathsheba, and have him leave you there, secure in the knowledge that our No. 6 bus is a fairly reliable and constant function of our local Transport Board. While you're at Bathsheba, keep an eye out on the No. 6, when it comes and goes and the interval between bus sightings -so you'll have a handle on what time you're going to return to the Bridgetown area! Also.... your Bridgetown terminal will be on the other side of Bridgetown, away from the Port area, and that'll be either a 20 min. brisk walk, or a $5? taxi ride if you can find one thereabouts. MOVE EARLY, get to Bathsheba early, have Lunch there somewhere and don't lag re. your return trip: you should be starting your return around 2 p.m. latest Your ship leaves at 5 and you have to be on board by 4:30 LATEST! Don't get left behind crying on the pier....................
