CleverUserNameHere Posted May 19, 2022 #1 Share Posted May 19, 2022 I received an email for "live" upgrade bidding for my May 29th Joy to Bermuda cruise stating that I had been "outbid" and that I could try again for a higher bid. I increased by $100 and got another email that I had been outbid again so I dropped it. Then I realized that I only got an email for one of the categories that I had previously bid on. Is that an indication that I may be "winning" the other bid? Thanks in advance!

I guess it could be an indication that your other bid is 'winning' but maybe it could mean that that bid is too low to meet some trigger for a 'live' offer... Rare ziggyuk Posted May 19, 2022 #3 Share Posted May 19, 2022 (edited) Is this new? Bidding has always been a sealed bid and the highest bid (taking everything into account) at the end wins. Is this a new system, auction style, like eBay where you keep bidding up the price? I have a bid in on my July cruise and it's the old style sealed bid, I certainly wont participate if they move to a auction style bidding system. I find most of the "recommended" bids are more costly than it would have been to just buy in to begin with. Having to compete leads me to believe almost everyone would be benefited to just call in and upgrade outright. 1

cybergremlin Posted May 19, 2022 #6 Share Posted May 19, 2022 Also got the email for the 29/05 Joy cruise, I don’t think it indicates you’re winning the other bid as I’ve put a bid in for multiple rooms and only received the email about 1 of them. as others have said it might be the bid isn’t high enough for their liking but you’re currently winning and they want more but we can only speculate

Trimone Posted May 19, 2022 #9 Share Posted May 19, 2022 I’ve upgraded twice through my PCC for my July cruise, it pays to look what you paid, and what higher categories are priced at, and when you’re ideal cabin becomes available book it. Upgrade Advantage on my cruise the minimum bid is more than what I would pay normally with PCC

Just ignore it. Bidding is voluntary. Many of us don't bother with it.

We didn't think we'd need internet, but due to a Norfolk port stop being cancelled we had to buy the streaming internet so we could talk to our realtor RE: our home inspection. Other than that, we didn't pay for anything extra, except the casino. We had free at sea specialty dining, the free at sea drinks, thermal spa (purchased ahead of time), all tips were pre-paid, and we actually cancelled our shore excursions due to the weather.
sassycruiser Posted May 19, 2022 #12 Share Posted May 19, 2022 I am Platinum with NCL and I think it may be our last. The nickel and dimming has become very inventive. My most frustrating experience was that I had a headache. I sent my husband to the store to buy a small Tylenol. Not available on board except through the medical center with a 140 evaluation. I decided to live with my headache and bought some in Bermuda. They may be doing that to avoid underreported Covid but still.

I received one (well two H5 & H6 both versions of 2-bedroom haven courtyard villa with H5 having a bigger balcony) of these a couple of weeks ago for Joy 5/22 (this Sunday). It actually got me a bit annoyed. My feeling was -- you asked me to bid; I did. Now I'm being shamed that the bid isn't high enough? If I'm outbid then just take their bid and move on. Anyhow, I did not have any interest in participating in a bidding war. So I just left it all as is. Fast-forward to about two hours ago... "You've Been Awarded An Upgrade Advantage!" email arrived in my inbox (for the H6) so what does that say about the real-time bidding "you're bid sucked" email from two weeks ago? Glad I didn't play the game. (I was booked in a HH Haven Family Villa on 15th floor) Good luck to you.

That being the case it's just a big con to screw more money, how many people would fall for that email? A lot I would suggest. Maybe it means the person with the higher bid when you got the email cancelled their bid, failed to make payment for their upgrade or bid themselves into a different category leaving you with the best bid. There are a lot of moving parts here...

Trimone Posted May 20, 2022 #17 Share Posted May 20, 2022 Unlike most auctions you are able to cancel bids anytime before being awarded, so for example the person with the higher bid May of had 5 other bids on different categories and awarded one of those, its not just about money if you are in an unattractive cabin NCL will always go with the better as it’s easier still to sell. I have upgraded twice using PCC for my cruise in July, I search for good cabins to become available, they do for all reasons then upgrade to them. I have about 6-7 upgrades available at present only one is value for money to me because I have chosen the cabin I wanted already.

alibabaxx Posted May 22, 2022 #19 Share Posted May 22, 2022 So how does it work if you bid on a few different categories? How do NCL decide to give you a particular category? If I put a lowish bid for a club balcony and a lowish bid for a haven what have I more chance of getting you think... or would it be better just to put bid in for a Haven as that's what we would prefer obviously ? You can read all 59 pages 😬 of this thread and learn pretty much everything that is known about this process, but I don't think you will find an answer. The process is just too obscure and there are too many variables. There is probably some combination of factors where your bid on the club balcony could hurt your chances on the Haven, but it seems rather unlikely to me. However, when I bid a few months ago I skipped the club balcony just in case. With the low occupancies it seemed like a rare chance to get a Haven room, but it's not much of a stretch to just book a club balcony some other time. Yes i've skipped the club balcony as there are 'lots' of them still available and just put bids on a couple of haven options . If we don't get any we have a nice balcony room anyway but would be amazing 🙂
