Skagway in 2023

Assuming Skagway is on somebody’s must-do bucket list, what is your gut feeling about booking a 2023 cruise now?

- Don’t  worry about it. While nothing is ever 100% guaranteed, they will almost certainly have this sorted out by next year

- Who the hell knows. Don’t book until everything is secured

First remember that Skagway is still docking ships.  Even if the port authority decides  not use either the forward or aft Rail Road pier they can continue to use the Broadway and Ore piers.  So if Skagway is on a must-do bucket list then book a ship which has historically used either the Broadway or Ore piers.

My husband (a retired geologist) and I have both read the Shannon and Wilson report on the side issues.   The descriptions of possible catastrophic slides are concerns about the older north slide.  The south slide is the one which happened in June, 2022.  The Skagway mayor is asking for an emergency disaster declaration and lobbying (hoping) for emergency funds.

Since no port on a cruise is ever guaranteed, I would go ahead and book, but not on any of the largest ships sailing to Alaska. The largest ships are the ones that must use the Railroad Dock and are most likely to be diverted.

If Skagway is a “must do”, book one of the Holland America cruise tours that gives you a land tour first, then you board the ship in Skagway. It actually gives you at least one overnight in Skagway so you have 2 days to explore.

Here is one itinerary option:

I was on Celebrity Millennium that was scheduled for R/R dock forward.  We were moved to another dock.

2018, HAL Volendam, we were at R/R dock too.

One ship anchored near R/R tendered.  Pick a ship with about 2000 passengers or less and I doubt it will be canceled.  Maybe that is why Princess canceled its stop at Skagway.  Not sure how big that ship was.
