Did Magic just do a quick test drive out to sea and come back to Bermuda on AUG 18?

Most likely to get to international waters to open up the shops  and casino during the night . Carnival may not have a casino permit like the other cruise lines that allow them open the casino after 9pm

Things may have changed since I was in Bermuda on the Ecstasy, but I think I remember the ship opening its casino even on the night we stayed berthed. But I didn't think of the shops - that's probably why they do maneuvers overnight.

Carnival needs to pay for a permit/fee to open the casino while overnight in Bermuda. if they dont pay, they can not open the casino. If they do pay, the ship stays docked with the casino open.

Depending on the cost for that permit fee, sometimes it is much cheaper to burn fuel to sail to international waters

They may need to process bilge water and sewage, and likely make water.  Bermuda is always having water shortages

Necessary, but nowhere near as fun as casino and shops.  I think it might also answer the questions about why the passengers have to return to the ship at night.😃
