rover16 Posted August 23, 2022 #26 Share Posted August 23, 2022 I don't mind paying a lot for GOOD wine. I hate paying a lot for average, to poor wine. I understand the need to markup and profit but $12 for a glass of Chard that would cost me $10 a bottle at home is hard to swallow. However, on my early August cruise many of their "bottle" prices were very reasonable.
iancal Posted August 23, 2022 #27 Share Posted August 23, 2022 (edited) I do not gnash my teeth or pull my hair out over the onboard cost of wine. I make the simple decision to buy or to abstain. No point since I do not control the pricing. Nor do I assume that the more I pay for a bottle of red the better it will be or the more I will enjoy it. More than once an MDR sommelier has recommended a less expensive red or over the more expensive one that I might have been inclined to spring for. If there is a wine on board that is available to purchase by the bottle, I will buy that and have it stored at a lounge so that it can be poured by glass when I want it. Less expensive than buying that wine--or any wine--by the glass. (The bartenders have always been very willing to do this for me. And, if my bottle is in Lounge B and I am in Lounge W, the bartender (or a Steward) will fetch my bottle from wherever.)
510picker Posted August 24, 2022 #29 Share Posted August 24, 2022 As many others have already said, markup of alcohol in land based restaurants is high, so you can expect markup on cruise ships to be even higher. With the policy changes to bringing wine onboard, it makes sense for us to buy onboard. As long as it is wet, I will likely drink it 🙂
