hans55 Posted September 2, 2022 #1 Share Posted September 2, 2022 If I use the ATM on board an NCL ship where does it appear to be from. I need to notify the bank ahead of time.
julig22 Posted September 2, 2022 #2 Share Posted September 2, 2022 Probably Florida, but just a guess. Depending on what you need in the way of cash, charging to your account in the casino can be cheaper. I believe the ATM is $5.95 plus whatever your bank charges. Charging to your on-board account is 3%, travel purchase. So no cash advance or foreign transaction fees. Depending on what your card rebates for travel, you can get some, if not all, of your fee back in points or statement credit.

Other cruises it would be "NCL".

It's the NCL corporate office address. 7665 Corporate Cenmiami Fl 7484

Here's where it helps to do a little research and planning. There are banks that reimburse "foreign" ATM charges (i.e., outside their bank network) and don't charge for the currency translation, if applicable. We use Schwab Bank, and I am sure there are others that work well for travel. Edited September 3, 2022 by SpacemanSpiff

It's not connected to my regular bank accounts so if there are any problems with fraudulent activity, any losses are limited to the pre-loaded amount in the account. But I could also call and have money transferred into that account if I needed emergency cash while traveling. But the ATM onboard is US-based, so no foreign charges for US passengers. And for what it's worth, some ships do have euros at guest services (not the ATM) but I don't know what conversion rate they use.

Can you expand on that, Mike? Last cruise in Eur. didn't want to carry wads of cash so used the room charge option but boy, those 3% charges in the casino sure add up. Going on Joy out of NYC this week so a little easier to go cash heavy and avoid most of those charges. Casino host advised using ATM for 5.99 fee (are there are other hidden fees?) and coming out way ahead on fees.

It was foreign as in an ATM not owned by your banking institution. ~Denise
Russiamomm Posted September 3, 2022 #10 Share Posted September 3, 2022 I don’t think there’s any right answer here. I use the ATM because my bank reimburses me for all ATM fees, so it makes sense for me to just pull cash out as I need it. It’s also scary in the casino. 😂. For some people paying the 3% makes sense. For others it makes no sense at all. You’d be better off carrying cash.
casofilia Posted September 4, 2022 #11 Share Posted September 4, 2022 @snorklinbarb For me there is an foreign cash transaction, the ATM charge and the exchange rate is terrible. As we cruise a lot I far prefer to carry cash and use a credit card.
