Rare styles27 Posted November 29, 2022 #1 Share Posted November 29, 2022 Hi Recent cruisers, any recommendations for excursions at this port? The “ports of call” boards aren’t very active on here.
shipgeeks Posted November 29, 2022 #2 Share Posted November 29, 2022 One time there we just walked through the nearby park and town. We looked up and saw a sloth in a tree. Bought coffee beans in a little open-air market, where female crew members were having manicures/pedicures. Another time we did a banana train excursion. Fairly interesting, but not earth-shaking -- but well run by a Swiss company. Docked next to us was a cargo ship delivering wind turbines. Huge.

That’s good to know that there are some things to do right at the port. The excursions they offer don’t seem very exciting lol
kelleherdl Posted November 30, 2022 #4 Share Posted November 30, 2022 If you do venture downtown there is a very large vibrant public market that is NOT directed as a tourist market. The new cathedral in town is really quite remarkable in its architecture. The old cathedral was destroyed by the earthquake. We really found a stroll downtown ending with the park at the end of the port area to be well worth a couple of hours. Dennis
neptuno Posted November 30, 2022 #5 Share Posted November 30, 2022 There was a great story a few years back about a 70 year old US Marine who was accosted by a local in Puerto Limon. The local ended up deceased. The 70 year old US Marine was not charged with any crime.

I’ve seen reports that this port isn’t safe but then again not many are nowadays.
ChattTenn Posted November 30, 2022 #7 Share Posted November 30, 2022 We had been to this port a few times many years ago and enjoyed this place very much. On our first few trips we toured with a local person with several members from the ship to Del Monte banana plantation, Tourtugera (sp) Canal to see wild lives and around town it was very nice tour for a half day. On the last few trips there we just walked outside the port area across street up the hill about 2 or 3 blocks (not very sure) the park is on the right then turning to the left and walking to the end of the block to a very nice local supermarket, it has Café Britts, very good Costa Rican vanilla. Back there they said it was not safe too but we had walked up to that market on several trips but nobody bothered us. Things might chance now.
rojicha07 Posted December 2, 2022 #8 Share Posted December 2, 2022 (edited) I'm Costa Rican. Limon is a bit dangerous, because there are too many drug traffickers and issues. I would recommend booking a excursion because there are many beautiful spots in this provice. For instance, the Cahuita National park is very worth it! It has one main easy to walk trail next to a beautiful beach and lots of wildlife! Edited December 2, 2022 by rojicha07
