Everyone's complaining about the internet on Princess, is it just as bad on HAL?

My goodness, you could not be more wrong.  When on cruises we almost always do our own thing at ports, but that is just a small part of the story.  We routinely use long cruises (Trans Atlantic and Trans Pacific) as a fun means to get to and from places where we stay for extended trips.  So, for example, in April we took a 27 day Seabourn cruise from Miami to Monte Carlo.  Once off the ship we spent a few days in Nice and than flew to Prague where we spent 3 weeks exploring the Czech Republic and Poland via a rental car.   We have an upcoming cruise from Japan to Seattle (42 days).  But we will fly into Japan about 2 weeks prior to that cruise and do our own thing before we make our way to the cruise port.

 

Even when we cruise the Caribbean out out of Miami we often fly-in several days early, rent a car, and drive down to Key West for a few days.  We sometimes joke that cruises are where we get some rest and relaxation before/after doing extended land trips.  I should add that we have met many other cruisers who follow a similar pattern of combining extended land travel with one or more cruises.

We were on the Nieuw Statendam with our 20 something daughter for two weeks (all over the Caribean)...dis-embarked today (12/3) She is a blogger and her life seems to depend on the internet and she seems to need it to exist.  She did fine.  Said it was slow sometimes but she was able to post and do whatever it is that she needs the internet to do.  And she was attached to it a lot.  I think if it did not work I would have heard about it and she would have probably jumped ship.  She was fine.

Maybe I’m not on the internet enough but to send pictures home.keep in touch and ply casino games online I have had no problem…but then again I’m on when I can’t sleep so that could be the answer…

I didn't send pictures at all or play games casino or otherwise.  Getting info your bank account isn't asking to much.  Neither is checking your credit card.

DH and I are not motor coach people.  We still find amazing stuff to do during port calls.  
 

I’ve often said our perfect shorex would be “We have a Toyota HiLux fueled and waiting at the pier for you; there’s a cooler of water and Diet Coke with USD50 in small local bills in that ziploc bag.   Leave the keys on the dash when you come back to the pier.”   Not everybody who cruises needs nor wants new places spoon-fed to them.
